In the midst of the holiday tournaments, so this is as good a time as any. Been keeping up with Sunkist Shootout and the SMSH Holiday Shootout as I'm in Lafayette at the moment. General thoughts:

- Watched De La Salle play at the Sunkist last night and I was extremely impressed. No trouble with pressure, very well-coached, and the entire team could shoot 3s They smashed Riverside Academy by 23 and it was never close. They have a good white kid that's a freshman and their best shooter is a sophomore. Future is bright. I see that they lost to Riverside and St Aug earlier this season, so they've got the revenge factor playing in big time. They play St Aug tonight, which should be an awesome game

- Riverside has a sick junior in Jared Butler but their depth is severely lacking this year. They have an 8th grader (#0) that doesnt give 1 frick. He comes in to take ankles and bury 3s - he's gonna be awesome one day.

- My alma mater (Class B school) lost to St Aug by 15 yesterday and gets Riverside in the 5th place semis this afternoon frick

- STM has their worst team that I've seen in my lifetime this year. 2 good guys who can penetrate and finish, but they're lacking the depth that they usually have. They always have 1 or 2 pure shooters that can rip it from anywhere, but not this year. They're also very soft inside. They barely beat a good Rummel team last night and play a quality Lincoln Prep squad this evening. Coaching should keep them in most games, and they can still press with the best of them.

- St Aug has a ton of guys that can fill it up, with Cedrick Jones and Caleb Daniels standing out. Very athletic and very big, but it's a shame that they're so poorly coached. I think De La Salle takes them down in the semis tonight

- Newman is now coached by Jimmy Tillette (The Professor) but they're lacking in athletes. They lost in the 1st round of the Sunkist and played against an athletic team from Florida last night. Dell Demps' son plays for them and dropped 47 yesterday despite a condition that prevents him from using 90% of his right arm (hard to explain, make a 90deg angle at your elbow and pretend you can't move it from there) Dude plays with a handicap and balls out.

- Peabody clobbered Cecilia in the SMSH tourney, as expected. Great shooter in ULL commit, Cedric Russell, and balanced attack from all around. A near-lock for the Top 28, as usual.

- NISH (#2 in 5A) was upset by SMSH yesterday after a 3rd quarter collapse (2 pts LOL). Managed to force OT, but couldn't hang on. Darrel Mitchell had his boys ready

Haven't seen any BR teams yet, y'all give me the scoop

Oh, and frick the LHSAA and frick the split.

Scotlandville is still the best team. Beat Madison Prep, Landry-Walker, Karr, Riverside twice. They're currently playing in a tournament in Atlanta. Beat Westside-Macon 60-39 last night and play another Georgia team today.

Javonte Smart is worth the price of admission and whike he is hands down the best player, the rest of the team is really good too. They have a freshman starting that's going to have a really good career

It's pretty tight between St Aug, De La Salle, and Riverside. Riverside and DLS have beaten each other comfortably (Riverside won first game by 17, DLS won last night by 23), and St Aug beat DLS in their first matchup in the Newman tourney by 7. Like I said, I think De La Salle wins tonight and wins the tourney tomorrow night.

Their coach, Paul Kelly, has done wonders with this team. They're only 3-A. Before hiring him as head coach they sucked. They have victories over several 5A teams over the past two years including many from the Catholic league and other very good team such as St. Paul's. It was a great job by their coach to be able to coach them to a blowout victory over powerhouse Riverside after losing to them by almost just as many points two or three days before. They also recently won the CYO tournament.

FYI- Paul Kelly was a starter for their 1986 state championship team (40-1) who had all American Dwayne Bryant as their leader. They finished in the USA today top 25 that year and in the top 10 from another national publication. Jimmy Tilette was also the coach of that team who now coaches Newman.

i don't know how the hell we got 5 losses in Mitch's senior year... with big leads blown to De La Salle and Comeaux

the Sugar Bowl Prep Classic will be fun. we might go through Landry Walker and Riverside (again) to get to a possible Saturday night prime time final against Scotlandville and Javonte Smart

then district which will be tough, and on February 11th, we're due to show up in Bowling Green, KY, and a few thousand WKU Hilltopper fans will become Owl fans for a day

ESA beat Newman 1st round and was beating St Aug after the first. AES has Eli Mouton who is a fricking stud, but nobody else. ESA could beat every team in that bottom bracket, which is why Danny threw them with all the powerhouses in the top bracket I think Riverside clobbers them tonight though. Tough game physically against St Aug, Riverside coming off bad loss, should be tough.

Teurlings was EASILY the worst team in the tourney this year. Them vs Westminster would've been a glorious game.

Yes, they're the most well-coached team here IMO

I need to catch up on the basketball scene. Glad ESA has a good team. Is JP still coaching them? And I need to go see Eli play. Haven't seen him since he was in middle school.

ESA gets good squads every 4-5 years. When your enrollment is ~200, you can't just reload every year. Very cyclical. JP is not coaching there - very long story. If you know him, you know someone that can give you the scoop. Mike Bourgeois is back, and it looks like Jason Fatheree (from stacked STM 2008 team) will take over. Drewbe Saab (from same STM team) will be an assistant

Go watch Ascension in district - Eli is worth the admission price

Coach Kelly is the best coach I've ever played for. We went small ball before it was a thing. Our center was 5-11 235, ended up signing a football scholly with southern. We went 4 out and used off ball screens to get our shooters open. When I got to de la salle, we went 11-21. Next two years with Coach Kelly we went 19-9 each year. It was a fun system to run because it wasn't about pace. It was about finding a layup, or three-point shot. Mid-range shots were looked down upon. I don't know what system they run now but it was fun playing in his offense.

Yup. His guys looked unreal last night. They were patient and used excellent ball movement to get optimal looks. Rodney Munson has unlimited range and was hitting from all over the place. Game was very fun to watch. Can't believe their scrappy white guy is only a frosh

when we played DLS in CYO i was impressed how they kept playing their game even when we had them down 15 in the second quarter... then they slowly started coming back until they led with 2 minutes left and held on as we missed the buzzer beater to win the game.

i need to catch every one too because we'll never have a team like this again... 10 seniors outside of Mitch Rob whom would be a playoff team without him IMO. After this run, Stockton will probably retire and we're back to nothing for the next 10-20 years lol...

If I can get this brief done, I'll be at the Sunkist tonight. I wanted to see the Butler kid from Riverside but now you've got me intrigued about De La Salle.
