"A troubled season came to an abrupt end for the Ridgeway (Memphis, Tenn.) boys basketball team after the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association disqualified the Roadrunners from the state tournament for using an ineligible player. The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reports that the school was notified of the decision on Thursday, the same day Ridgeway was scheduled to play for the Region 8-AAA championship.
The player in question, a transfer student from Louisiana, earned his General Equivalency Diploma from Shreveport Job Corps, according to the Commercial-Appeal. That makes him ineligible to compete at the high school level.
WREG 3 Memphis reports that the ineligible player was a 22-year-old man who used a fake transcript to enroll at the school.
"There was a 22-year old who falsified his documents and they got disqualified from everything and a lot of players getting scouted got screwed over," Ridgeway student Carlos Delgado told the station.
The disqualification is the latest blow to a Ridgeway program that has dealt with its fair share of adversity and hardship this season. Last week, a Ridgeway assistant coach was shot dead in his home. The week before that, 10 players were suspended for two games for their part in a fight during the regular season finale."
