Just found out something that makes me dislike Barry Bonds even more

Dude was a helluva baseball player but a piss poor teammate. The story is from Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS - the Pittsburgh Pirates vs. the Atlanta Braves. It's the Bottom of the 9th, two outs, and the Pirates are head by a single run. The pinch hitter Francisco Cabrera is up to bat at the plate. After hitting a fouled liner down the left field line, Golden Glove winner and Pirates center fielder Andy Van Slyke attempted to signal to Bonds to take a more shallow position in left field. In response to this, Bonds flipped Van Slyke off and stayed where he was.
On the very next pitch, Cabrera hit the ball into shallow left field - right where Van Slyke was trying to position Barry Bonds. David Justice scored almost immediately to tie the game up, and then Sid Bream beat Bonds's throw to home to win the game and advance his team to the World Series. That was the last game Bonds played in a Pirates uniform.
Van Slyke waited until almost 20 years after the game to finally say something about the little disagreement the two of them had before that fateful hit but I have no reason to doubt his claim. Bonds never came out to deny the claim either.

Barry Bonds is one of the biggest pricks to ever step foot in a baseball clubhouse. His teammates at Arizona State wanted to boot him from the team even though they knew he gave them a better chance to win the CWS.

Don't care, still HR king

Who gives a crap? What say Barry moved over to that spot, and I hit dropped in where he had previously lined up? Barry bonds being a better teammate would not have won the World Series. Stories like this coming out 20 years later are so ridiculous.

People bitch about ESPN today but they really lost me when they devoted like 2 years of daily coverage to Bonds, BALCO, and the roids and the trial etc. circa 2006-7. I still hate Pedro Gomez’s face.

Edit: Just noticed that the score graphic shows St Louis and Pittsburgh in the 14th. WTF?

Didn't the AZ St head coach let the team vote on whether or not to kick him off the team and then vetoed it when they voted to do so? He thought there was no way they'd vote Barry off.

Maybe they were talking about it during a Cards/Pirates game? " Seems kind of a dick move to Pirates fans

quote:Nah. Anything that tarnishes the legacy of a world-class a-hole is fair game. History should not be kind to jerk offs like him.

I feel Like the center fielder had a reason to believe it was going to go there, and that reason was based on how the guy was hitting the ball.

That's the version I've read

That graphic is almost undoubtedly not from the live broadcast of that game. I believe that was August 13, 2013, a game the cards won 4-3 in 14. They were probably showing that clip during the game.
box score

Bonds was/is a huge piece of shite.
One of the most hated players of his era by fellow big leaguers.
None of his douchebaggery should exclude him from Hall of Fame consideration, however, I.E. Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, etc.
Fortunately, he was/is a piece of shite away from field as well, and his heavy involvement in steroids and bogus jacked-up statistics should keep him banned from Hall of Fame induction forever.

Not as bad as when he stood there while a ball hit the wall while playing left field.

that's exactly what happened. It's common baseball strategy to make outfield adjustments in situations like this.

Nothing tops this one though

Is Van Slyke really implying that Bonds had any chance of catching that ball? He would have had to be playing deep short to catch that.
