Shaka was supposed to a be program changing hire for texas, the savior. He hasn't done squat and texas has had some talent, certainly more than he had at VCU. Last year Isaiah Taylor, that guy was a major stud and he got bounced on a half court shot vs northern iowa, tough ending and rolled over into the disaster season now. It's just tough when you have these young guys like isaiah taylor leave early to go be d-leaguers

Feel like this was a hasty decision on Georgetown's part. Overall, he's done pretty well at Georgetown. Hasn't made any deep tourney runs recently, but pretty consistently got to the tournament. Had a rough last 2 years though.

Not really. They're trending the wrong way and are losing their best two players and their best recruit had asked out of his LOI before JT even got axed. They only had one recruit coming in. Their attendance is way down and they had nothing but bad buzz. JT III had more skins on the wall there but the situation wasn't too different from Johnny Jones.

They can't do any better than this, or is Big John Thompson still influencing the program?

Big John runs that program

Not saying the last 2 seasons were anything but bad, but it's only been 2 bad seasons, seems too quick to fire a guy who gave you 10 good years before that. Seems like he deserved at least 1 more year to get the ship righted.

He's only won 2 games in the NCAA tourney over the past 9 years, hasn't made the tourney 3 of the last 4 years.

Over the past 4 seasons, Johnny Jones has more victories than JTIII.

But even the best year of the last five years gets downgraded because FGCU dunked all over their heads in the 1st rd when they were a 2 seed.

With what they're losing and what's coming in they would've needed a couple guys currently on the team to explode for them to sniff the tourney.

Two bad seasons and a whole shitload of tournament flops since their Final Four in 2007

Is Georgetown still an elite job? Kind of stunk lately, facilities and resources aren't as good as other elite schools, and the Big East isn't the old Big East.

Just wondering because I don't really see them as an elite basketball school anymore.

No but it's not that far off. Get someone in who can keep the DC talent home and they'll be really good again.

It's tough for schools that don't have P5 football programs to compete year in and year in the NCAA. Gonzaga and Villanova are exceptions but if you look at the sweet 16 it's dominated by P5 football schools.

But is their ceiling an elite "mid-major" now? Like Butler or Xavier. There's no way they can ever recapture what made them hot in the streets during the 80's.

As much potential as Villanova. Just need the right coach.

I think they need a clean break from their past.

I would hire a young up and comer like LSU did.

ETA Go ahead and downvote, motherfrickers. It's the truth.

I'm sure you'd love to see the NCAA basketball plantation continue, where most coaches are white and most players are black. Those days are done in most places.

It really doesn't matter to me, but it is amusing that a majority white Catholic school in the Nation's capitol will not even consider hiring another white coach as long as John Thompson breathes air.

I mean a SWAC school had a white head coach recently.

Says who? Big John hired Escherick as an assistant and named him his successor.

Georgetown has only had one coach since the white basketball coach. You kinda sound like an uninformed racist.

The number of black coaches in NCAA basketball keeps declining. It is a problem, the Chicago Tribune suggested an NCAA "Rooney Rule."
