People are writing the dude off and I understand people being upset that he could throw away such talent, but i'm still pulling for the guy. How can people be so angry with someone that didn't hurt anyone but them self?
He was suspended from baseball from 2004-2006 but was able to comeback and become an AL MVP. That is amazing. And for that simple fact alone, I'm not ready to write the guy completely off.
I'm a sucker for the underdog story and also understand the struggles substance abuse can bring. Wish people could just be in the brain of an addict for one day. That's all it would take to bring about an understanding.
I know i've had some successful times and amazing people (females) in my life that I let down/threw away that I wish I could change. Some of those females actually HATE me and refuse to have a well rounded understanding of it all. But being angry and upset over situations surrounding an addict just doesn't seem like the best or right course of action. Addicts don't need pity either though.

I know nothing about addiction, I've never experienced it personally or through friends/family.
But I imagine addiction would be tough to conquor, and it would be a battle you would have to fight daily for the rest of your life. Now imagine trying to do that when you're a multi-millionaire and MLB superstar. The temptation presented to him is more than any of us can likely imagine.

I started this on the OT

Because people in general like to hate things.
Posted on 2/26/15 at 12:07 pm to SuperSaint
Because people are assholes and have bad lives so the enjoy the misery of others.
Many also know nothing about addiction

can you be indifferent to him and not be an a-hole?
He's pissed away plenty of opportunities but that doesn't anger me, makes me say 'just another guy who makes bad choices.' Acceptable or not?

My mother overcame a nearly 2 decade long addiction that was so bad that she would go missing for months on end sometimes. She tore my family apart. I've been to therapy, NA meetings to try and grasp what goes on in an addicts head...it was truly awful.
She's 3 years clean now, and one of the most amazing people I know. Her outlook on life is wonderful and she takes NOTHING for granted.
I hope the same happens for JH and any other addict.

If he simply fell off the wagon and did some blow one night, it's not the end of the world. Relapse is part of addiction. Its not like he relapsed and killed 4 people.

I mean it sucks for him, but I'm not pro or anti for him right now.

You should be pro anyone who is trying to fight an addiction. Nothing to do with sports. But idk how you could be indifferent to someone turning their life around.

Absolutely. And sadly odds say it won't be his last. I feel for him because he's obviously trying to maintain his baseball career while dealing with addiction and it's already not easy being an addict, much less around the shite that goes on with pro athletes. I hope for his sake he can still maintain that career while trying to get clean again. But he may end up having to make the choice of a pro career and his life.

Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson are going to get more sympathy than this guy, and that's a damn shame

I dont' think he's rooting against him. Not sure why we all have to root for josh.

again...and again...maybe just call it fatigue with the story. I mean why do i have to root for a guy who hangs around tattoo parlors and starts doing drugs after being the #1 pick in the baseball draft?

I get what you're saying. Just because someone isn't actively rooting for an addict doesn't mean they wouldn't be happy to seem them get clean. And not actively rooting for someone doesn't mean you're rooting against them.

yeah, I mean do I know him personally? Hell no.
if it were someone I knew that was a good friend I'd be more invested in what was going on.
but I don't believe in kicking someone when they are down. People make mistakes all the time and athletes mistakes are magnified every time.
It's amazing to see the following they get... good or bad.
