Yeah but then why play at all?
Why did McCaffrey play their last game of the season? Or the one before? (they were out of contention for the pac 10)

I can see a difference between a regular season game and a bowl game that means nothing in a players eyes.

They've got to weigh the pros and cons of these decisions. Look at the backlash they've received from some for missing the bowl game. That may negatively affect their draft stock in the eyes of some GMs. The more games they miss intentionally, the more potential drawback they'll have.
If this has no effect on the draft stock of Fournette and McCaffery, you'll see guys sit out earlier and earlier trying to find the line where the cons outweigh the pros. Hell, some people suggested Fournette sit out the entire season already. If you cannot improve your stock, and the risk of hurting it by playing is higher than the risk of hurting it by sitting out, logic says you sit.
