Why so? From my rudimentary research, it seems that proper biomechanical movement is learned easier at younger ages

Seriously? Because 7-10 year olds learning "speed and agility" drills isn't going to help them. If they want to get better at whatever sport they're playign, they should practice the fundamentals and improve actually playing the game. Getting their 40 yard dash and 3 cone shuttle time down doesnt' mean shite, this isn't the combine.

A waste of money. But desperate parents who need to live vicariously through their kids will gladly drop the money.

Learning the proper running technique and working on speed/agility seems like it would help.

I tend to agree with you. The vast majority of kids don't naturally know how to run properly. They flail their arms, have poor knee lift, wiggle their shoulders, etc

I'm sure some places are a racket, but i know of one place here in particular that's ~$100 for a full year. That's nothing.

As long as they focus on form and keep it fun for the kids its ok. There are a lot of "play" activities that as function as good speed and agility skills for kids.
