They were supposed to be a top three team for the next five years. If they didn't use Harbaugh as a scapegoat, the NFC west would've been brutal the last three years with the rise of Arizona.

What exactly happened with all their talent?
I know they had behavioral problems like Aldon Smith who got suspended and went elsewhere.
I know they also had an inordinate number of retirements from players with years left to play.
Did people walk away from careers just because the Niners were that much of a dumpster fire to deal with?
