Is there any way a "penalty limit" could be successfully implemented in the NFL?

I saw a stat at some point today that more flags have been thrown this year than at this point in any season in NFL history. The latest trend is to legislate more and more rules into the game to the point where I think most people are surprised when a flag isn't called on a play. Frankly it's to the point where you don't even few like you're watching much of the game itself because half of it was flagged for something.

Anyway. Could some kind of penalty limit ever be installed? Let's say very basic concept is refs get 5-7 flags a quarter to use. To me something like that would really force them to only use them on egregious instances of breaking the rules. I know it sounds ridiculous but I think we're going to hit a critical mass soon of players, teams, media, fans getting sick of seeing yellow rain down Every Sunday day. Something has to be done.

They just need more common sense rules and to let the players play.

The "call the penalty if there's even a doubt" mentality they've established for refs is ruining the game.

Maybe players should follow the rules?

The flags are excessive, but until the rules are changed, you are going to continue to see a hefty amount of flags.

Absolutely not possible at least the quarter limit. You could get to the maximum and just start tackling receivers at the snap

seriously might be one of the dumbest suggestions I've ever heard. it would be a free for all after the limit would be reached. PI and holding every play

No but they could stop some of the bullshite calls away from the play and the can't touch the QB penalties.

Not to mention the shite that wouldn't be called while the refs try to stay within their limit

"There were 12 men on the field. Please reset the game clock to 14 seconds left before the half. The game has reached the penalty limit, therefore penalties will no longer be called. Good luck men."

it's pretty funny to think about if it were actually implemented. It would be like fricking WWE once the limit was reached.

Wtf this might be the dumbest idea ever. Once the limit is reached what is to stop the defense from having 30 guys on the field?

This is a work environment issue. These refs need performance reviews from the Head Office. Weed out the flag happy refs. Make them afraid of losing their jobs for mistakes throughout their career.

How about a "penalty limit" where if a player gets X number of flags, he has to sit a series? (And on personal fouls/unsportsmanlike conducts, if he gets X number of those he's tossed from the game.)

A penalty limit is impossible; however, football is getting out of control. Football is by far me and my dads favorite sport. However, we were talking yesterday while watching and we said from a neutral observers point if you didnt grow up with any bias, football freaking sucks. So many stoppages in play and freakign rules for only like 6 minutes of actual gametime

How about just make fewer things illegal? Repeal the Mel Blount rule for starters.
