Is the NCAA baseball and basketball tournament the best thing for competition?

I have always believed the NCAA basketball tournament is the hardest sport for a coach to win a national title. I believe college baseball is the second hardest. Are these tournament designed for players and coaches, or for fans? Which is more important? While I know we cannot do the NBA or MLB style playoffs, would a larger sample size (longer series and fewer teams) be better to help ensure the best team actually wins?

Does the best team have to actually win? Omaha will still be Omaha with or without any one specific team

I just know as a coach I like objectivity. The longer a series and sample size, the greater chance the better team wins. As a fan, of course, who doesn't love watching a 15 beat a 2. Just didn't know if that was the best thing for the student athlete.

Right but you’re speaking as a coach. Everyone else is fans, lots of whom have no ties to specific teams participating in any one game

Basketball is obviously just a crap shoot but it’s entertaining as hell
Baseball, I think it’s fair and still gets some of the best teams. You can lose 4 games in The NCAA tournament and win the CWS
In baseball the better team wins at a lower clip than probably any other sport across all levels. It’s just the nature of the game. But how do you define the best baseball team? Because a team with a dominant ace can suck and win every game their ace pitches

It’s weird baseball plays 3 game series all season then they switch to a weird regional format for the postseason. Then they go to a series for the super regional. Then they go back to a regional format for Omaha. Then they go to a series for the championship.

Why even play the games? Just look at the roster, determine who has the “better” team, and give them the win.

NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament is another good one, 16 teams single elimination

In basketball and baseball every team has a legit shot.
In baseball, all 64 teams have a chance to win, and one bad/fluke day won’t eliminate you.
No one likes to just vote for a winner.
Even the NFL playoffs allow for some upset winners (see the 19-1 Patriots).

Now that’s the one that needs to expand… At least have best two out of three rounds or something

Another thing that I've always had an issue with is the fact that in NCAA basketball and baseball, the auto-bids allow teams into the tournament that straight up don't deserve to be there. The teams that actually have a better chance to make a run in the tournament have to finish in the top 40 despite it being a field of 64 teams. Case in point - should a team playing as well as Ole Miss is now have to squeak into the tourney just because they were down for part of the season when they were always clearly a top 64 team? NC State arguably deserved a spot in the tourney spot over Ole Miss - that ends up being argued over instead of the fact that the SWAC tourney champ has to get a spot.
And yes I know Fresno state won it all as a 4 seed, but how many 4 seeds would be more competitive over the years if they were all actually deserving? Would not having more deserving 4 seeds have more P5 schools' fans watching the games and getting college baseball better ratings?

just say you hate the non P5 conferences. it's okay
that's why they call it the automatic bid. you can't question those, and when you're on the bubble you can't leave it up to the committee. that's why the automatic bids are so valuable

I think NCAA baseball this time of the year, Conference Tourneys through Omaha, is some of the best weeks of sports throughout the year.
Too bad the major networks don't promote Regional and Super Regional tournaments more.

Any kind of playoff system generally rewards the team(s) who have a decent regular season but get hot towards the end of it. It's all about peaking at the right time.
The fans benefit... but it really gives the coaches and players something to continue to coach and play for.

The best teams, a lot of times are simply the teams that got hot at the end of the year, or happened to play in a bracket they matched up well in. And it is fan oriented and that's a good thing.
