Is gymnastics proof that golf and tennis players are babies?

I've always been annoyed that the precious geniuses who play tennis and golf insist on having utter silence from the audience in order to ply their craft. Meanwhile, you see these gymnasts performing insane feats - say, on the balance beam - all while another athlete is doing a floor routine in the background - set to both music and periodic applause.

They should make golf and tennis more like the Phoenix Open atmosphere instead of like high tea with the queen.

I agree with you, I would like to see more stadium type enviroments on some tournaments.

U know the difference of the three? Two are careers and one is an activity.

I also think that players on the course are more prone to noises that are short and sharp over the silence. I've seen plenty of people play golf with music playing in the background (while not blaring).

I remember Bubba Watson cheering on the crowd asking them to be loud during the Ryder Cup opening tee shots a few years back. Was pretty cool.

Idk how comparable the two are, but I do think its incredible that they can knock out perfection on the beam, while the craziness of the floor routine is going on in the background. That would be so distracting.

I like silence in my backswing, but I suck, so it doesn't make much of a difference.

Completely agree absolute silence in tennis isn't necessary.

But I wonder if you were conditioned to noise/activity in your backswing if you would even notice it at all.

Guys are playing for a million dollars compared to a worthless medal. A mess up from a golfer can cause him to lose hundreds of thousands. That's why it's quiet.

Yes u are. Tiger use to back off mid swing.

Not about being a baby. It's about what's at stake.

a)Both Olympic golf and Olympic tennis will have the same absurd "quiet" requirements

b)The smaller tours (where the golfers are basically struggling journeymen and competing for way less than a million dollars) are identical in their quiet requirements

c)gymnasts on the Olympics and Worlds stage absolutely are competing for millions of dollars

golf is hard enough without scumbags trying to screw with your concentration

the result would be worse scores-- but the trashier fans are happy. brilliant idea, commish!

I'm aware of when Tiger was a teenager, his dad toughened him up by screwing with him mid-swing, but that does not mean that Tiger was not absolutely conditioned in his playing career to silence.

you're trying to hit a tiny little ball that is not in motion...

Why is that an absurd requirement?

That's only because they are disturbing the silence. If the norm were no limits on crowd noise ever, I don't think it would affect concentration all that much.

So, are you arguing that gymnastics scores would be higher if all events were done separately and with no distractions? Or are you arguing that setting up triple-flip passing runs on a 4-inch wide beam doesn't require as much concentration as swinging at a ball?
