Is DiMaggio's hit streak the GOAT individual performance for a year in sports?

Joe DiMaggio won the American League MVP award in 1941 over Ted Williams who hit .406 – the last time anyone hit .400 for an entire season.

After extending the streak to 56 on July 16, DiMaggio led the American League in runs (80), hits (124) and RBIs (76), was tied for the lead in HR (20) and was second to Ted Williams in batting (.395 to .375).

Only challengers have been Pete Rose and Wee Willie Keeler at 12 hits behind.

Jimmy Rollins had a 38-game streak that spanned the 2005 and 2006 seasons. “It was nice to be mentioned,’’ Rollins said, referring to DiMaggio, “but it would be like throwing three consecutive no-hitters.’’

When Hall of Famer Paul Molitor had a 39-game streak as a designated hitter in 1987, he never thought DiMaggio was in reach. “I was old enough and knew enough about it not to go there,’’ Molitor said.

The Yankees went 41-13-2 during DiMaggio’s streak... 41 victories in 56 games.

When the streak began on May 15, the Yanks were 14-14, 5 1/2 games behind Cleveland in fourth place.

After Game No. 56 of the streak, the Yankees were 55-27 and first place with a 6-game lead over Cleveland.

He only struck out five times during the streak.

DiMaggio’s first strikeout didn’t come until his 61st plate appearance during the streak and he did not strikeout a single time in the last 149 plate appearances.

He would ultimately go 197 plate appearances between strikeouts.

DiMaggio finished the streak with 56 singles and 56 runs scored and 55 RBIs.

During the streak, he faced four future Hall of Fame pitchers.

Babe Ruth's power during the dead ball era. He literally changed the way baseball was played.

And 48.5 minutes per game, which is not a typo.

It's difficult to compare basketball and baseball.

I'm not one to pound the desk about "hitting a baseball is the most difficult thing in sports" but scoring buckets so tall and really...DiMaggio being on an even playing field...I think they aren't exactly comparable.

And the Yankees won the World Series in 1941.

And the Warriors lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Celtics in 1962.

Favre's is more impressive imo. Same streak, but it's a helluva lot tougher to survive that long in football vs baseball.

Wilt was the first name I thought of as well but for a totally different reason. He averaged about 1.5 women a night for 37 years.

Won 9 times, including 3 majors (US Open, British Open, PGA Champ).

Led the Tour in: all around, scoring average, birdie average, eagle average, greens in regulation, total driving, earnings.

Finished in the top 5 in 17 of 20 events.

Went on to win the Masters the following April, holding all 4 majors at one time.

More than one season, but Unitas' 47 game TD streak deserves to be mentioned with DiMaggio. Yes Brees broke it, but JU was playing when OL had to block with their forearms and DBs could mug receivers (rules not changed until the '70s). IMHO it's the NFL's greatest achievement.

I feel Babe Ruth hitting more HRs than every other team in the American League is a more impressive individual feat.

Bob Gibson in 1968 was no joke either.

1.12 ERA. Complete game in 28 of 34 starts. 13 shutouts.

And the hit streak takes away somewhat from his entire season.

He led the league in almost all measures...and it's the only time someone has lost the MVP while batting over .400 Ted Williams. When would this ever happen any other year? Ted Williams batted .406 and was second in homers and lost the MVP.

His team had an unbelievable record during his streak - unmatched.

And the Yankees won the World Series after starting 14-14 when the streak started.

Called “the most extraordinary thing that ever happened in American sports” by scientist (and baseball sabermetrician) Stephen Jay Gould.

Often forgotten, DiMaggio...after the streak was ended...he would go on to hit safely in his next 16 straight games, for a total of 72 out of 73.
