I am pulling from two oral histories; one by SI about the founding of the Big 12 LINKand the other about Mizzou going to SEC LINK. Both of which are worth the read.
The TL;DR is that ESPN/ABC wanted the full big 8 plus Texas and A&M. Tech was the best left and Baylor got in purely on politics.
From day one, Nebraska and Texas fought for power. The other schools were just happy to be there especially the Texas schools and little 6 schools.
As Mizzou leaves they act like children, even though they openly looked for spots in the pac-12.
Now, they basically run the big 12. OU is the only school that can be completely sure they will land on their feet if the big 12 is done in 2025.

quote:
Slocum: Nebraska came in with a great program and a great history, and I think they were offended all along. Tom Osborne told me that at the time that they resented the way they were treated at some time in the conference. They were like a little stepchild from the north.
Walden: I won't say who [told me], but one of the major reasons why Nebraska left to go to the Big Ten [in 2010] was they were tired of Texas. That's just an opinion. Maybe 100 people will deny that, but that's what I surmise.
As Mizzou leaves they act like children, even though they openly looked for spots in the pac-12.
quote:
ALDEN: “Texas’ worst years are like Missouri’s best years. Who makes those kind of comments? You know who makes those kind of comments? Arrogant people in arrogant institutions. And that’s exactly, in my opinion, that’s what we saw throughout the whole process.”

Texas will go Indy because they think they are the best
They will be the next Notre Dame. Not winning shite in decades

I don't see why not, from a competitive standpoint-- they haven't even been the alpha in the Big 12 for a while.

honestly if anything i think the big 12 is holding texas back. they would wreck shop as an indy. i would love to play texas every year.
replace kansas, iowa state, west virginia, kansas state and children of the corn U with Arkansas, Ohio State, USC, BYU and FSU and they wouldn't need their own network their shite would be on ESPN every week

But they are kind of holding everyone by the balls right now. The big 12 is filled with teams that are going to bottom out if Texas bounces. So they own the league for a political stand point.
I cannot imagine they would have a good working relationship with an Alabama, Ohio state/ Michigan or USC. The ego's would make for good theater

A&M wasn't happy to be in the Big 12. We wanted to go to the SEC but got boned out of it b/c of state politics.

Not really. Texas isn't running anything if they ever end up in the B1G which is why they probably will never end up there.

That's my point. Any of the power 5 taking Texas in would be hiring a CEO for a mid-senior level position at best. Given that they have been the deciding factor in two different conferences breaking up, are they really worth the hassle?
Saying that, someone is going to take them with open arms

As others have said, Texas will go independent and will destroy their program in the process.

Texas isn't going Independent.
Powers that be and ESPN-Disney would sabotage it.
No way Texas just broadcasts their own games free of charge and prints money.
Plus all the presidents want uniformity and conference cohesion.
If UT goes indy, no one good is going to schedule the NCAA turncoats. Why would rival conferences enrich a program that won't share? Its not like ND which has a history of locked in games...and even they had to partially join the ACC.
They will be stuck playing the old crap arse teams from the SWC.
