HS Baseball Playoff Question

I know they changed the baseball playoff format a few years ago. From my understanding it is round 1: 1 game, round 2 and 3: 3 game series, semi's and finals: 1 game.
Why do they put the 2nd and 3rd rounds as 3 game series, and not the semi's and finals? You would think those two rounds would benefit from a 3 game series even more than the 2nd and 3rd rounds.
Do they use this format for all divisions, or is it just in 4A and 5A?

The LHSAA wants a Chamionship Tournament. Therefore the last two rounds are single elimination, but at the same site on back to back days.

just 5A and 4A. 5A has been doing it for a few years and 4A adopted it for this year.

i personally think it is dumb. The same 5-7 teams will win state every year.

Then maybe the other teams should get better players. This format helps stop a team from riding one hot pitcher all the way through. It helps ensure that the better teams are moving on, not just the team with the best pitcher.
They should be doing series starting in Round 1 as well.

Best-of-3 is already being done in several other states; Louisiana is always behind. Although, it should be best-of-3 throughout or do a regional/super regional/world series like college baseball.

The top 8 seeds should host 4 team double elimination regional. The 8 winners could then do another 4 team double elimination the next weekend. Those 2 winners do a best of 3 series. Takes 3 weeks to get a champ. You could stagger 2-3 classes at 1 site if you want a bigger environment than just 2 schools at a championship site.

Actually, last year was the first year they used it, and only in 5A last year.
Oh, and I agree that it is dumb to use that format only up to the semi finals. It would be tough though to play so many games in a single weekend.

Can you imagine some of the arm abuse by the coaches in a game 4 or 5 of a do or die game? Most of these teams don't have 7-8 guys they can go to over the course of a weekend, so they are going to run their 1-3 guys out there when they don't need to be.
I don't mind the format now, but it wouldn't bother me too much if they extended it a week and played a best of 3 in the first round as well.

The first round is made up of way too many lopsided matchups to make a best of 3 worthwhile. Until you get to about #10 seed, the games are pretty much decided on paper, especially with all higher seeds getting home field.

Maybe and not sure if the data backs it up, but I just hate the idea of a team with a legit #1 and then jackshit behind that getting a round 1 win then getting rolled up in the 2nd round when you need a little depth.

i think 5A could use best two out of three in round 1... all the playoff teams are pretty legit

Agreed. Most of the top 5-6 seeds should roll, sure. But 7-16 seeds could have their hands full in a 3 game series. Make them earn it.
