I hate the Yankees but I actually disagree. They were up 1-0 late in the game, if he doesn't make that play the ball doesn't reach home in time and the tying run scores, and you can speculate on whether the Yankees go on to lose the game and series. You could argue that it's overrated from the standpoint of it being Derek jeter. If Carlos Guillen on the mariners makes that same play nobody probably remembers today, but the play itself was definitely not overrated.
If you want to talk about overrated plays, the play against Boston where he makes the catch on the run and take 5 more steps and swan dives into the crowd, that was/is an overrated play

If Jeremy Giambi slides instead of going in standing up the tying run probably scores anyway. It's an extremely overrated play, and he's made countless better ones.

I agree. People assume that the ball wasnt going to get there in time. If anything, Jeter stopping the ball then flipping slowed the progress up greatly. And the trajectory was right on to begin with.

Roger Maris had one of the greatest seasons in baseball history in 1961.
But he only played 7 season for the Yankees.
I know he had cancer and died at a relatively young age (in his 50's), and I know there had been bad blood between him and the Yankees for a long time after he went to the Cardinals, and there was a huge "reconciliation" deal before his death, but does anyone else agree that his name sorta stands out on this list as a sore thumb?
He only had over 30 home runs 3 times. Is this deserving of a permanent retired jersey number?

The assumption here is all on you, Jeter did in fact make the play for an out, you are assuming the ball doesn't take a weird bounce, die in the dirt or that Jorge can scoop a bouncing ball and make the tag.
The play was huge within the context of an elimination game, it gets the attention because it was Jeter and its a quick 10 second clip. The attention spans of the public, especially when it comes to 3 hr baseball games, puts a huge premium on clips that like - from commercials to SportsCenter. Mussina won that game pitching lights out but that's boring compared to a fast action clip.

Even if Jeter was a Royal, then he was still a Hall of Famer
ETA: Change my mind, he would be viewed as better then Biggio and most likely be first ballot. But it wouldnt be anything like he is now

It really is impressive, honestly. Of all the single digit number players the Yankees have had, only Martin and Maris are the non-icons. Numbers 2 through 8 are pretty ridiculous:
2 - Jeter
3 - Ruth
4 - Gehrig
5 - DiMaggio

8 - Dickey and Berra

Nah, he would be first ballot. 3400+ hits at SS along with 260 bombs is first ballot. It was a fluke Biggio did not get first ballot. No need to subject hypothetical KC Jeter to that as well.

As a pretty big Yankees fan -- AGREED!!!!
Jeter and Mo did it the right way. No scandals and conducted themselves with class (obviously many people in this thread don't appreciate that and I suppose that is part of the erosion of our society), but enough is enough. Hopefully next year we can start playing some baseball and stop living in the recent past of Jeter and Mo.

I'm a Yankees fan and I agree, not sure Maris deserves a retired number.
I don't think Reggie Jackson's number should be retired, but that's a different subject for a different time.

Agree that if Jeter was a Royal that he would be a hall of famer still. The difference though is that as a Yankee he will be first ballot probably.
Proof of this is the fact that Biggio is still not in the Hall after two tries.
Jeter was really clutch over his 20 years and there was no one better than him in the playoffs. that is what is going to make him a first ballot guy. if he was playing for a small market team like the royals, he wouldn't have near as many playoff appearances.

I'm shocked at some of the comments about Roger Maris. The guy was a legend and no doubt deserves his number staying retired. One could argue that his record 61 home run season would still be standing if the steroid era didn't happen.
