How big of an underdog does a team have to be to "upset" the favorite?

I got a message on my phone from ESPN saying "No. 1 Kentucky upset by No. 11 UCLA 97-92".

It got me thinking... is it really an "upset" if an 11th ranked powerhouse basketball program like UCLA beats another powerhouse basketball program ranked only 10 spots higher than them?

Does the term "upset" get used too much? How big of an underdog does a team have to be for it to be considered an upset if they win?

My favorite is when the actual betting favorite wins, despite being ranked worse, and the media says it was an upset anyway.

A good one was in 2014 when #5 Alabama "shocked" with an "upset" of #1 Mississippi State despite being 7 point favorites.

Agreed, that's the one that bothers me. If this game was at Ucla, for example, they may have been favorites (maybe not, but let's say they were) and everyone would still be calling it an upset.

Legend has it that the originator of the word upset was a horse called Upset.

Upset beat Man O' War (considered one of the Top 3 horses of all-time and who had won 20 of 21 races).

Upset and Man O' War raced each other 6 more times and Man O' War won every single time.

Beating Man O' War at the Sanford Memorial was Upset's only major win and he retired with $37,504 in earnings.

Man O' War won 14 major stakes while also winning the Triple Crown and retired with $249,465 in earnings.

So to answer your question...

An upset should be a victory over another where that team or person wins otherwise 90% of the time.

I hate it in CFB when two undefeateds face each other in October...#4 vs. #9 and it's touted as an "upset."

Why because the polls said one undefeated was better than another with little empirical knowledge?

UCLA was ranked #11 - undefeated
Kentucky was ranked #1 - undefeated

It's not like UCLA had lost a bunch of games.
