What's the tie-breaking procedure?

quote:

If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 6 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative.
1. The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other.
2. The records of the three tied teams will be compared within their division.
3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5, 6, and 7).
4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents.
5. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative.
6. The representative will be chosen by random draw.

Buckeyes would get it at step one.

yeah no

They might get it, but all three teams would be 1-1 against each other. So it would definitely go past step one.

ETA: It would go to step 5, which would then eliminate Penn State.

You're correct that step 5 is where it goes to in the event of a 3 way tie. Ohio State has a lot of work to go to consider getting to that point.

Doesn't matter what anyone else does. Ohio State wins out and they're in.

Ohio State wins out 11-1 (7-1). Penn State wins out 10-2 (7-1) which isn't far-fetched. Michigan loses a game between now and the The Game. Ohio State is not a division champ. Good luck getting in the playoff.

Ohio State wins out and the chips fall the way they probably will...Buckeyes are 12-1 and Big 10 conference champs. Yet, the PAC-12 and Big 12 produce undefeated champs and the ACC/SEC produce at worst 1-loss champs. Good luck getting in the playoff.

Not sure why you're personally offended at the notion, but Ohio State as of this very moment does not control its own destiny. Do I think if they win out, they'll be in the playoff? Certainly. But your original comment is flat wrong. Sorry you can't accept it. Good luck the rest of the season.

I have been thinking the B1G may mess itself out of a playoff spot. Mich loses at MSU (unlikely) or Iowa (could happen), then OSU's wins against Michigan and like a two loss Wisconsin or Nebraska will seem meh. I guess you'd have to give them the nod over a Louisville that didn't win its conference in that scenario, but the margin for error for the conference is shrinking.

Michigan is going to the ship.

Everything since the off season and satellite camps has been pointing to Saban vs. Harbaugh.

It's too good a storyline. Voters vote for storylines, you don't think the committee has TV whispering in their ear.

Half are probably on contract with ESPN.

I think Michigan wins and Sabans recruiting luster starts to fade and just as Pete Carroll, Harbaugh topples another dynasty.

I'm not the one jumping up and down about this. If Ohio State wins out, they'll be in the playoff and it doesn't matter what anyone else does. There would be bitching to no end, but it would happen. Accept it.

If Bama, Clemson, Washington, and West Virginia all win out OSU isn't getting in. This isn't like two years ago when OSU jumped Baylor and TCU, all those teams had a loss. A 12-0 West Virginia will not be passed up for a 1 loss OSU. But we won't have to worry about that as WVU is going down this weekend. I could see the committee putting OSU in over a 12-0 Baylor due to their terrible non conference schedule and the whole Briles thing.

The Big 12 will not put anyone in the playoff this year.
