The Atlanta Hawks are eyeing three potential locations for a new arena, including the Civic Center, according to Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

In addition to the Civic Center, a city-owned property that Reed put up for sale in recent years, the team is also considering an undisclosed Atlanta location and rehabbing Philips Arena, the mayor told reporters on Thursday.

Reed said he’s met once with the team’s new owners and repeated his willingness to consider a deal involving the use public funds. The mayor first indicated that option last year in the wake of controversy involving the team’s previous leadership.

“What I’m willing to do is come to the table with a plan that makes sense and is fair to the people of Atlanta,” Reed said. “I’m not closed to participating in a reasonable plan to make sure that the Hawks remain in the city and that’s what I expressed in our meeting.”

Atlanta is spending a ton of money on their teams (and I'm aware Blank's contribution to the football stadium)

Why not? If the government is going to give you free shite, take it.

The Georgia Dome is barely 20 years old too.

But they built it after the dome craze was over pretty much.

Historically, we really haven't kept our pro stadiums very long:

Atlanta Fulton-County Stadium: 31 years (26 for the Falcons)
The Omni: 25 years
Georgia Dome: 25 years
Turner Field: 21 years (unless GSU takes it over)
Philips Arena: probably 20 years if new arena is built

I actually love Phillips Arena. I especially like how the pillars out front spell out Atlanta.

Time replace the Smoothie King Center I guess. Lifespan of an arena is 15 years now

Phillips is in a pretty good spot, if it was me, I'd just renovate the hell out of it.

Also, "Atlanta" didn't pay shite for the Braves and "only" 200M for the Falcons. Not near the level other cities are dropping for stadiums.

lol where would they put it? ours is in a pretty logical spot.

i can see Atlanta building them a shiny new place and then having it in a location so bad they have to replace it again lol

Agreed. I think they would be crazy to leave that site. There are over 12,000 hotel rooms within walking distance, CNN Center, centennial Olympic park, world of coke, aquarium, CFB HOF, Ferris wheel, bars, restaurants, etc.
