I think the Iron Bowl fanbases, due to them living in the same state and both having recent success, hate each other on a more primal level. They wish ill things upon each other and not just in a sport sense.

I think that rivalry is stronger IMO.

And most people outside of the Big 10 haven't give a shite about Ohio St. and Michigan game for 20 years outside of a couple years they were both competitive.

And for something to be considered "the greatest rivalry in sports" one would think there would need to be annual national interest in the game - which im not sure still exists.

Ohio St v Michigan is certainly one of the the most famous rivalries but since there's no more "pomp and circumstance" than any SEC rivalry, fans in the south mainly care only when they're both highly ranked.

The "national" appeal of Ohio St and Michigan may be that it seems over half the college football fans in cities like New York, for example, are alumni.

people in other parts of the country don't care about the iron bowl unless there are national title implications.

Do southerners consider this game the greatest rivalry in CFB?

WAT?

No one outside of those 2 schools, considers it that.

To be fair, no one cares about the Egg Bowl, even those in the South outside of Mississippi.

This year is VERY rare in the fact it has playoff/title implications. Too bad Ole Miss couldn't keep it together after the LSU loss and make this game a top 5 matchup.

thats fine.

Its just that the Iron Bowl isn't just about football. All of these people live in the same state. In the same cities. They go to the same churches and send their kids to the same schools before college.

Their lives are just so much more intertwined 365 days of the year that it really leads to some legitimate animosity towards one another. They don't just hate each other during football season. They hate each other in the communion line at church.

OSU is favored by 20. I don't think there has ever been a spread that big in this rivalry game. If Harbaugh isn't hired, the decline of the rivalry will continue.

And there's nothing else either. No pro sports teams, no caring about men's basketball.

Can't you make the argument that the OSU vs. Michigan game doesn't have title implications for one team, so their is some relevance to it. Or are you arguing that both teams have to be good at the same time for it to be relevant?

I feel like it's lost a huge amount of luster and I'm invested in it. There is an entire generation of OSU fans that have never lost consistently to Michigan, and vice versa for SCUM supporters. Even 2 wins in a row would bring Michigan back in the rivalry

You will never get anyone to admit that one rivalry in one part of the country is bigger than one in another. I of course think it's a huge rivalry, but I won't discount anyone who says the biggest is Auburn/Bama, or FSU/UF, or UF/UGA or Ole Miss/Miss St or USC/UCLA or UT/OU.

To me the best one overall is Navy/Army. It just is so much more important than a football game. I am so into the pageantry of college sports that it puts that game over the top

I always look forward to it because I appreciate history.

(even if I think the Big10 has completely sucked the last 5 years and can't compete with the SEC or Pac-12 - and that means you tOSU...you can play the 3rd best team in the Pac-12 or SEC...that's your bowl game. Sun Bowl or Holiday.)

I think of Keith Jackson while watching the game...those were the days in the 80's and 90's.

Yep.

Its college football 24/7 in that state. It lives in their heads. They don't forget about it during baseball and basketball. They don't really care about pro football. Its Bama and Auburn football 24/7/365.

When I was younger I remember thinking it was the greatest cfb rivalry but yes it has lost a ton of its luster. Until that rematch year the Big 10 was still arguably the best conference in the county and this game had title implications regularly. Ohio State has done their best to keep things up but Michigan's fall seems to have gone hand in hand with the entire conference's decline in prestige.

The 06 game kinda soured me on it. All that talk about how Michigan deserved a rematch and we supposedly didn't belong on the same field as Ohio State.
