As a coach, he led the UH men's basketball team to 27 consecutive winning seasons.
He led the Cougars to 14 NCAA Tournaments and they advanced the Final Four five times (1967, 1968, 1982, 1983, 1984).
Under Lewis, the Cougars played in two NCAA championship games (1983-1984).
In 1968, the Cougars played in the first nationally televised college basketball game against UCLA. Over 50,000 fans were in attendance at the Astrodome for what would become known as "The Game of the Century."
