Great SB nation article on why LeBron can't replicate last night every night.

Do you know that Jordan didn't always play like that, either? It's been so long, perhaps we've forgotten. MJ once dropped 55-8-4 in the finals (Game 4, 1993). He also went 6-of-19 in a close-out game against Seattle in 1996, and 5-of-19 in Game 6 of that series (still won by the Bulls). But because Jordan was 6-0 in the finals for his career and LeBron is 2-4, we drop all the relevant context.

Because Kobe has five rings and LeBron just two, we ignore that Bryant, in winning that last ring, shot 40 percent for the series with as many turnovers as assists. We ignore that Kobe went 6-of-24 in Game 7 of those 2010 finals.
Yep

Won't get much traction here. People believe Jordan and Kobe went undefeated and shot 100%

I've countered with player A vs player B and made absurd hypotheticals, and some posters will say the guy who shoots 2 of 20 and wins is a better player than if he had shot 18 of 20 but lost.

Ho Hum.

These discussions are always ridiculous. It's obvious to anybody with a brain that MJ is the GOAT and that LBJ is WAY better than Kobe.

I don't think this is far off. My only argument would be if Lebron and MJ played at the same time, the GOAT argument would be even more heated. I don't think anyone is wrong in thinking either are the greatest of all time.
They both are the two best players who can even compete or be called the greatest.

Why can't LeBron James average 41 points, 16 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks?
Because this isn't 1960.
Or 1996.
Because this isn't 1960.
Or 1996.

Bring back illegal defense and he would come pretty dang close. If I didn't have to worry about zone defenses and knew I could iso LBJ every play as a coach, I'm pretty sure I could find a way for him to get at least 30 ppg.

Career PER
1. Michael Jordan - 27.91
2. Lebron James - 27.65
23. Kobe Bryant - 22.90

Who's better? MJ or Lebron?

Glad you noticed the part I wanted to bring up. But I didn't feel like everyone calling me an idiot for saying the truth.

MJ did it just about every night. Stats below don't happen if you have off nights. The dip in '96 is because (1) that Sonics team is one of the best to never win a title, and (2) Karl switched GP onto MJ after game three once MJ had eviscerated the Sonics for three straight games.
Bron is incredible, and can absolutely come close to replicating last night. If they are going to win he'll have to.
91 31.2 - 6.6 - 11.4(!) - 2.8 - 1.4
92 35.8 - 4.8 - 6.5 - 1.67 - .33
93 41(record) - 8.5 - 6.3 - 1.67 - .67
96 27.3 - 5.3 - 4.2 - 1.67 - .17
97 32.3 - 7 - 6 - 1.17 - .83
98 33.5 - 4.0 - 2.3 - 1.83 - .67

I first want to say that the article's overall point is well taken.
But...
I generally agree with this, but unfortunately this doesn't apply to Game 4. It was evident LeBron wasn't doing what he COULD do. I don't know whether it was mental or not, but he definitely wasn't aggressive. It WAS FEASIBLE for him to play better, but he appeared he didn't even try. Instead of taking Iguodala or Green to the rim, he settled for poor jumpshots, which he missed.
I'm saying this because the recent criticism of LeBron was because of Game 4, and it was warranted.
But...

We do a disservice to ourselves and future generations of basketball fans when we shed context for convenience. We do a disservice to the contemporary fandom when we respond to greatness with heightened demands. If your response to an epic game like the one LeBron just had is a criticism of LeBron's usual efforts, please share what would satisfy you and then ask yourself whether that is remotely feasible.

I think he can in terms of intensity and desire. Something that he seems to lack at certain times in the playoffs.
He shouldn't have to score 41 every night, that's crazy but his "want to" should be like last night for every finals game

quote:Nope. Fans of Jordan and Kobe realize these things, but can bring arguments against Lebron's greatness for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, him bolting to Miami and forming a super team. I don't give him too much shite about it because KG, Pierce and Ray did it too, but still. Also, for every bad game in the Finals by Jordan you have a "Flu Game" that off sets it by a wide margin.

quote:Only a moron says LBJ is WAY better than Kobe. If Lebron had half of Kobe's heart and seriousness, Lebron would have 4 or 5 rings. Lebron is a better basketball player, but Kobe was better at what it takes to get the championship.

Is heart and seriousness code for Shaq in his prime?

Heart is Shaq.
Seriousness is Gasol.
Seriousness is Gasol.

This is dumb.
Kobe = will power
LeBron = athletic ability
It is stupid to try to say that Lebron has ever had the mental toughness and will power that Kobe had. It is also stupid to assert that Kobe is anywhere near the athlete that Lebron is.
