Add up the damage and it’s staggering. In one offseason, the Padres traded away one of the best catchers in baseball (Grandal); an above-average starting pitcher (Hahn); an above-average corner outfielder (Seth Smith); an above-average center fielder (Maybin); and pretty much their entire farm system. Per Baseball America, the Padres traded away their no. 1 (Wisler), no. 2 (Turner), no. 4 (Ross), no. 6 (Fried), no. 9 (Eflin), no. 10 (Jace Peterson), no. 15 (Bauers), no. 16 (Mallex Smith), no. 21 (Dustin Peterson), no. 23 (Burch Smith), and no. 30 (Barbato) prospects, along with the 41st pick in the draft.

In return, they got one of the best young outfielders in the sport, who can’t stay healthy, in Wil Myers. They got one year of Justin Upton. They got Matt Kemp and his bloated contract. They got a good young catcher in Derek Norris who isn’t nearly as good as the young catcher they traded. They got two very good relievers in Brandon Maurer and Craig Kimbrel. They inherited the misfortune of playing Will Middlebrooks.

The Kimbrel trade already looks like one of the worst trades any team has made in years — and it wasn’t the worst trade the Padres made this winter. That would be the Kemp trade, in which they took on a contract the Dodgers were desperate to unload5 and gave up arguably their most valuable commodity in Grandal. Years from now, the trade for Justin Upton might look as bad as these two. If it doesn’t, the trade for Wil Myers might

I agree with that...deals every day.

But when you're a small market team trying a one year win now approach with aging stars when you're not really that close to begin with is pretty dumb.

But he was the toast of the town for a bit.

Plus the entertainment of them trading off half of the guys they acquired over the next two weeks.

He's a little dramatic. Maybin has been above average for the Braves this year but everywhere else he's been in his career he's been average. Seth Smith is a guy that's been wildly inconsistent in his major league time as well

He also gave up a shite ton of promising prospects (Fried, Wisler, Joe Ross, Trea Turner, etc) and a good bit of cash taking on Upton's deal. I don't think it's that dramatic.

So is it safe to say that Bruce Bochy made the right career move?

I'm not sure of the specifics, but the Dodgers are still paying a good portion of Kemp's contract.

Agreed. I have always liked Seth Smith, but he is a platoon player. Maybin has had a breakout year, but I get why Preller would want to move on with his injury history and the fact that he's already 28 or 29.

i feel the GM did what every fan in every sport would want to do. Make video game-like or fantasy-like trades to try and improve their teams. This is exhibit A why that shite doesn't happen very much. Team's can't simply be built off of hype and offensive numbers alone

ETA: with that being said, none of those prospects have proven anything.

San Diego has a metro population of over 3 million people.

ETA: Damn, I guess that is small comparatively. Only Baltimore, Tampa, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, KC, Cincinnati, and Milwaukee are smaller. Oakland if you don't count San Francisco is, too.

So... It's the 9th smallest market in baseball. That's crazy.

All I know as a Nats fan is we traded Steven Souza for Joe Ross and Trae Turner.

Who are both bad arse.

They're paying a lot this year. The pads will be paying kemp 18 million each season from 2016 to 2019. That's gonna sting.

The Kemp trade is the only one I have issues with. It was a bad move.

Reality is you should cash on on most prospects when their value is High because most won't make it and the ones who do usually aren't that good.
