It makes it harder on the offense.
Think about high school hash marks. They are even wider than college. It gives the offense more room on one side to design a play.
At the pro level the hash marks being in tight let's the defense remain in a more balanced formation

I say give one point for anything up to 30 yards. Two points 30-45, three from 45-60 and 4 points for 60 plus.
