I almost wonder if it's the plan. Offer hi something he can't refuse to keep some fans around, but don't make any real effort to improve the team. At least you got him for 5 years.

The only way he would opt out is if his market value was above his remaining contract. Player options are a lose-lose for the team.

Watching this press-conference... does anyone on the stage (other than Stanton... and maybe Loria) actually think this salary is a good idea? Doesn't seem so.
