The sponsorship doesn't have to necessarily convey the idea that the drink confers some athletic advantage. Does Coca-Cola provide an advantage for any athlete, or anyone in the world for that matter, in any aspect? No. Does that stop them from sponsoring the athlete or stop the athlete from accepting the money?
People who are stupid enough to drink a certain product because a popular sports athlete receives monetary compensation from the company surely aren't worried about the physiological effects of Gatorade consumption.
