Cam Newton is the new face of the NFL LINK
Newton’s MVP performance and connection with younger fans has created a marketing juggernaut. “We’ve never seen a rise like this from any athlete like we’ve seen with Cam,” says Peter Laatz, an executive at research firm Repucom. Laatz is referencing data from his company’s Celebrity DBI, which tracks consumer perceptions of celebrities.
If you drill into the data even deeper, you’ll find that Newton resonates even greater with the next generation of NFL fans in the coveted 13-25 demographic. Older fans write letters condemning Newton’s “egotism, arrogance and poor sportsmanship.” They don’t like the dancing and the “dabbin.” Young fans love it though. They see a 26-year-old having fun on the football field. He takes victory laps around Bank of America Stadium high-fiving fans. He chest bumps six-year-old cancer patients. He hands the ball to a kid in the stands after each touchdown.
The NFL marketing landscape has been dominated the last decade by a quartet of now 30-something, Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and the Manning brothers. “Those guys are boring,” says Laatz. “Cam is more entertaining and more relevant with the millennial audience.”
But Newton might just be getting started as the new face of the NFL. His team plays Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals with a Super Bowl berth on the line. “A Super Bowl win would put him up over the top,” says Laatz. “The Super Bowl is the biggest stage you can perform on in the U.S. I don’t think his rise is anywhere close to done.”

quote:Face is singular.
Face of the NFL isn't one person
quote:They are clearly trying to identify the change in real time. Obviously if Cam doesn't continue on his current trajectory they will be wrong.
hasn't changed because of one season.
It's similar to what is happening in the NBA with steph curry. Curry is ahead of cam after winning MVP and a championship last season and backing it up with the way he is playing this season.

of course I am a Newton fan and I believe he is a unreal Quarterback. That out of the way. I am no huge fan of some of his antics but as long as he keeps his nose clean, he is the most marketable playing the in NFL right now

quote:Which is how they are defining "face of the nfl". I get a lot of people don't like cam, but it is hard to argue against his marketability.

Carson Palmer and the Cards bout to end his run tonight though...
I do like Cam though. He's done tons of good versus bad. He really seems like a fun loving, cool guy. Those types of people are a joy to be around.

Well if Cam is the so called Face of the NFL and kids grow up to be like him get ready for a bunch of terrible sports coming in. One of the most unprofessional players on the field on Sundays. Having fun is one thing but trying to rub everything in the other teams face is another. I like his light hearted approach but all the other stuff is trash.
And no I don't think giving footballs to kids in the stands is a bad thing. But mocking about first down every time is.

Hey everyone look at me, I give footballs to little kids. Ain't I swell?

There's a ton of hypocrisy with Newton on this board especially. If he's on your team ripping down Seahawks and Falcons banners off the Superdome walls and grabbing flags from those fans, it's "frick yeah, get that shite out of the dome". I don't mind it. It's got an old school competitor feel to it. He isn't worried about people head hunting his antics either cause they can't cause the dudes a wall and tough as hell.

Which he has never done.
Lying to support your point ain't supporting your point, brah.

Who do you think is?
Cam is, but most of these older guys hate it. All of the teenage kids love him and want to be like him. Kids will buy whatever the guy endorses.

Ooof. A sign of the league's impending decline, I suppose

Oh well. The NFL is a shitty product anyway. May as well have 6'5 250lbs child as its face.

So standing up after each first down and pointing down field is not rubbing it in someone's face? Elaborate TD dances that can take over a minute to complete is not rubbing it in the other team's face?
The dude is an amazing athlete but a poor sport.
