2 big changes to CFB occured in the early 80's. Scholarship limits and the CFA. Prior to the CFA, the NCAA negotiated the TV deals and limited teams to 1 or 2 TV games a year. Schools filed suit and won the right for schools and conferences to negoitate TV deals and teams to be on TV as many times a year as they wanted.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

In 1980 The Sugar Bowl had #1 UGA vs #4 ND and not #2 Pitt. I'll let you guess why.

Pitt only made it to #2 after the bowl games. ND had been #2, and accepted the bid prior to the USC game, which they lost. At that point Fla. State jumped to #2 and they were in the Orange Bowl.

yeah, it was a different world, getting and taking bowl bids before the season was over. I remember LSU accepted a bid to the Orange Bowl in 82 a week before losing to 3-7 Tulane, in TS. I thought Pitt was # 2 going in, but that team was LOADED.

In any event, I don't think the Sugar Bowl would have taken TCU, unless they had to, but who knows. If they did and TCU beat AU, maybe they would have split or won it all if Oregon had lost. Some times it was fun with several teams maybe having a shot at the MNC going into the Bowls, but ultimatly I think its better having a true 1 v 2 match up.

1/2 the Pac-10 was on probation that year, I believe it was USC, UCLA, Arizona State, and both Oregon schools

Good points. Miami and FSU did "schedule their asses off" and nobody really follows that model today.

Look at LSUs schedule next year.
