It's unlikely that a team would get another play off in 10 seconds, so it actually helps the offense a bit. They have an option to use a timeout to avoid the runoff.

If the ref told the Vikings they had the option, I'm fine with the rule. But if the ref forgot to ask then this game has been tainted

wow. thats nuts then. like you said, they must not have known the rule. they couldve had another shot at the touchdown.
