I hate to be cynical, but I just read the story about this and came to state this. I wonder what his financial situation is like. It seems like this was staged for some reason.

I agree that this is a hoax for money. I mean nine miles. Sure people have swam the English Channel and from Cuba to Miami, but you have to be training for very long time. Just being in good shape and working out is not the same as training for a multi-mile swim.

Plus when people do those long swims they have people in boats next to them since it is so dangerous.

The whole auto pilot, falling out of the boat thing is off. The jelly fish stings, near miss rescues and shark circling is out of a bad movie.
