Michigan State University on Monday filed a lawsuit against ESPN after the sports media giant submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for police reports of alleged sexual assaults by three of the school's football players, according to the Lansing State Journal's Matt Mencarini.

MSU reportedly argued it was put in an "impossible position" because the county prosecutor's office "asked the university to withhold the records and ESPN asked for them to be released," per Mencarini.

Really, ESPN? Why don't you leave them alone and wait for the INFO like everyone else. Greedy bastards

I guess I don't see what ESPN did wrong? Other than the typical "let's hate on ESPN because it's the cool thing to do"

ETA: they did a FOIA request, they're asking for info available to the public. Unless I misunderstand what a FOIA request is. MSU should gear their frustration towards their rapists

A lot of UM alumni work for ESPN. It's that simple. They are out to get MSU. Plus for some bizarre reason the Syracuse alumni who work for ESPN don't like MSU.

And that's fine. This situation should be investigated to the fullest extent.

You just hope it applies both ways when stuff like this happens elsewhere

Actually, MSU isn't the bad guy here. The county prosecutor is.

Well according to the MSB, ESPN is like a CNN/BET mash-up and they hate white people.

I'd estimate there's a 3-9% chance that Sparty prevails in court.

It's an odd reaction to an FOIA. If the prosecutors office says you cannot release something, then why not just ignore it? Suing someone for submitting it seems ridiculous

It is a poorly written article that leaves out information to make the story clear. Also, ESPN has sued MSU in the past for claiming privilege over FOIA requested materials. It is likely MSU is simply being proactive to get court guidance (a declaratory judgement) because they don't want to violate FOIA or orders from the prosecutor.

No different than Schefty getting JPP's medical records from an "anonymous" source. I equate ESPN's current format and their decline to when MTV stopped playing videos and started with all those extra talk shows. I have pretty much stopped watching ESPN because its all talking heads now. No sports anymore.

This is why it's easy to lie about sexual assault nowadays people. You are no longer innocent until proven guilty if the word "rape" or "sexual assault" is thrown around, even if "alleged" precedes it.
