EILI5: Why are the Browns looking to dump Baker Mayfield?

Reports out today that the Browns will meet with Deshaun Watson. Fine, makes sense. He's a better QB and under contract longer than Mayfield.
In recent weeks, reports are out that the Browns front office has made clear to Mayfield they won't be offering an extension. Meanwhile today, word is that Mayfield could be traded even if the Browns don't land Watson and Baker is in his feels on twitter
This is a franchise that spent 20 years looking for a QB to get them out of complete irrelevance. Seems weird they're actively souring their relationship with an adequate QB.

The Browns still could trade Mayfield even if they don’t get Watson, according to Cabot.
“The visit with Watson seems like a dealbreaker, and Mayfield and the Browns could be headed for a divorce regardless if Watson lands here or not,” Cabot writes

Maybe because he's average and always hurt?

Sooo...better than every Browns QB/first round pick QB for the last 20+ years?
Who tf is this franchise to get uppity about having an average QB?

An adequate QB getting max money will never win a Super Bowl.

Lol he’s missed 3 games in his entire career.

Baker sucks
I would be very intrigued by a Watson-Mayfield trade
Myles Garrett May be the best player not named Aaron Donald in all of football. Tough division and the ravens won’t have 5000 injuries this year

If the Browns can’t win it with God overseeing the roster, they’ll never win it.

I respect both sides of this. Baker isn't the guy that's going to get a mediocre team over the hump. He's a decent quarterback, but not a franchise changer. This is a smart move by the Browns.
Baker realizes this and will definitely go on and find another starting job, maybe at a more complete team. He gets to leave the team on good terms, not being hated by the fans for dragging them down.

Cabot is an instigator "reporter" that tries to create drama.
She isn't helping the team.
Doing her "job" maybe, but doing no favors to the Browns.

Baker Mayfield is arse and they didn't have the balls to tell him to sit this year
They could have limped into the playoffs with Keenum
Missed it with Baker

No who's blindly looking at stats.

List all of the injuries that have kept him out of games in his career. He’s missed less games in 4 years than Burrow has in 2. Is Burrow injury prone?
Take your L and keep it moving.

There’s no such thing as “max money” in the NFL, but when elite guys are getting 40+ million, a guy like Baker is going to get $20-30 million. Hell Teddy Bridgewater is Chad Pennington and even he got $15 million a year.

MKC and Grossi are complete hacks.

I can tell you for a fact, going to 2 browns games in the last 3 years that they will take average over risking letting him go and gambling on another QB.
Dude took a franchise that had 1 win the previous 2 seasons before he got there and won them a playoff game. Came a bad call away from the AFC title game. Has had 4 different HCs. He needs stability in the organization

To be fair, they were tanking.

But you are spot on here. Their HC’s preferred style of play (heavy on run, play action deep or short passes) doesn’t really lend itself to a guy getting a lot of big passing games. And when you build your offensive line to go heavy on the run with pass protection taking the backseat, it’s harder for you to protect your qb in obvious passing situations when you’re behind.
Pretty sure Baker had the third or fourth highest Sack% in the league.
