what's up guys, SFP here. just wanted to give props to my boy Dan Polk for winning the One Drop
good guy at the forefront of trying to bring poker back. gives a lot of free content on his Youtube page. also created Upswing Poker, which is one of the best training sites out there. Upswing has a lot of NLHE, heads up, PLO, and MTT content. Upswing actually just launched its MTT module and it's hilarious that he wins one of the biggest tournaments in the world shortly thereafter (even though he's not really a tournament player).
just for reference, the buyin to this event is more than 10x the buyin of the WSOP Main Event

Doug Polk is many things. He is a high-stakes poker pro and poker coach at Upswing Poker. He is a popular social media, YouTube and live-streaming personality. And now he is a three-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner. Polk topped an elite field of 130 entries in the 2017 $111,111 buy-in High Roller for One Drop to secure his third WSOP title and the top prize of $3,686,865.
“It does feel much better,” said Polk of this bracelet, compared with his prior two wins in a $1,000 turbo and $1,000 tag-team no-limit hold’em events. “To win that much money against tough people in a world-class event, it’s way different.”

That's a nice purse. Is it taxed on his state of residence or in the state he won? I assume the latter.
Posted on 6/7/17 at 9:05 am to Damone
well for him, it's the same state (he lives in Nevada), but it's actually both
American poker players get the short end of the stick. gambling winnings aren't taxed in countries like Canada, UK, etc

Almost positive he lives in Vancouver. Not sure what the tax rate is there.
He has a house in Vegas but lives full time in Canada so that he can play in online games.

However, i really love the game of poker; a lot. If i didnt, I wouldnt be here today, and i wouldnt of tried to play, and lost money along the way. Maybe thats the biggest key, admitting that I am a losing player and need some help. I dont think i am a very bad player, just very marginally losing. Ive had a few just wicked beats along the way (As everyone else has as well), and compounded with what i believe is poor play, the results are amplified.
Perhaps what im asking for here, is if there is anyone here, who out of the kindness of their heart would make an attempt to help me understand bankroll issues, the way to move up, and ultimately, a fresh perception on the game. I really am willing to learn, and im certainly not a begginner in the world of poker. I just need to get my game sorted out, or Im afraid that i just need to quit this, because i cant keep losing money at this game.

his path is pretty interesting. back in those days, it was all the rage to play 10+ tables of full ring games and just rake in a lil bit of money over a larger scale. after that issue he ended up focusing on a single game (heads up NLHE) and with fewer tables and actually developed his game into the best (for a while, probably not true anymore) HUNLHE guy for a couple years
so he was doing what everyone else was doing, not really improving (as that post shows), and then he changed things and focused on a different game and actually developing his skills in that game (by playing fewer tables) and then was rewarded with a stratospheric rise
also, he was actively participating in the poker community on 2+2 so people got to see this in real time (And indirectly travel with him on the journey)
it's similar to another popular poker Youtuber, Joe Ingram

I didn't think this ended until July?
At least thats the impression I got from the radio yesterday.

I post on the forum where Doug originally went to learn poker (not 2+2). He use to be a fellow starcraft player. His first posts on the site are hilarious when you compare how much he has accomplished since
How's the grind been going SFP?

i had to take about a month off from mid-april to mid-may b/c of work work. started dabbling in PLO
took some hits but back on track and the roll is at 10,700. goal is $20k by 2018 so i'm well on my way. getting over the hump and winning that tournament to give me a roll to play 2-5 was so major. i have 20 buyins now so the "money worry" isn't there and i can pressure the people at the table who see the chips as actual money now

What was your starting roll? How many nights/week do you play?
Posted on 6/7/17 at 10:10 am to SlowFlowPro
Doug had roughly 43% of himself in the tourney. After his buy-in and taxes he made ~600-700k.
Posted on 6/7/17 at 10:21 am to TheOcean
$300 but I had to reload a few times and it came to about $1200 total. That roll is net (so the taxes on my $9k tournament win are accounted for and only the $5600 or so profit is in the roll)
I play 3-6/week depending on the games or what my real life is like. Like I played only 2-3x that month. I concentrate on Friday-Sunday to maximize the Texas tourist $. My gf is pretty understanding so I spend a lot of time with her on week nights

Isn't that a larger number that normal? On Twitter the other day, Haralabob guesstimated that two of the other players had around 10% of themselves and made it seem like a standard #.

He has money, unlike most poker pros (esp tournament pros)
Posted on 6/7/17 at 10:36 am to DallasTiger45
Honestly the bigger buy-in tournaments are super -EV, even for players like Doug. These tourneys are ego stroking tourneys. I wouldn't be surprised if he had less than 40% -- that's just what I'm reading on another forum.

How's the rake? I'm considering playing live, but not sure if I can stomach the 20 hands/hr and insane rake

he has to be honest b/c he's giving away 2% of his profit at the WSOP
