It's really amazing that he was able to climb out of that car. NASCAR has done a hell of a job making those cars safe.
This.

If you're taller, it doesn't mean his feet would have been in the engine bay. His seat would have just been further back toward the rear. Their feet position doesn't change

How long till NASCAR starts penalizing the crap out of drivers for blocking?

ESPN keeps showing the edge of the walkway where the engine is sitting, but not the stands.
Then on the wide shots of the stands from the infield, you can see that entire section of stands empty, but people standing along each side "rubbernecking".
When people hang around afterwards to stand around and watch, that isn't good

Because standing that close to cars passing at almost 200mph has to be incredible. If i ever go to a race, id do the exact same thing.

Yea, I've done it at a dirt track and they're going about 120 into the corners and its awesome.

NASCAR has a serious safety-testing program / facility. Their latest agenda will have to be to find some way to shoot cars and/or engines at safety fence mockups at 200+ MPH in order to test the results.
Where do I sign up?

You had to figure it happened with all the people by the fence at that section. Just hope no one was seriously injured.
