if you believe in prayers, now is the time as Dan Straily will start again tonight and try to stop the 1 game losing skid. The stros are treading water without Jed Lowrie and George Springer and some quite disturbing trends with the bullpen lately...

Last night Velasquez was solid again in a losss and was promptly send back to AA to cheerlead for the Hooks for a week or so to help manage his innings count...its likely that he will not pitch down there, but rest until he's called back up.

Interesting comments from Lunhow about adding some punch to the bullpen...as I speculated last night, it seems one option is to move Velasquez to the pen down the stretch:

quote:

the Astros do want more velocity, they could find an answer in-house.

The team is expected to find a way to keep Lance McCullers available for any possibly playoff push, even with innings limits. But Vince Velasquez, who also throws heat, could be that guy.

“We have several guys,” Luhnow said. “(Jandel) Gustave, (Michael) Feliz, (Reymin) Guduan. If you think about September, October, Velasquez in that role potentially, or yeah, there’s (2015 draftee Riley) Ferrell — there are a lot of different ways we can go. But also, experience matters too in that role. Just because someone throws hard … doesn’t mean (they’ll be effective in the bigs).

“It’s something we think about.”

I wonder if he also thinks about what it would be like to have a replacement level first baseman in the lineup every night...

Daryle Ward is holding down 1B for the independent Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. It's something to think about...

I expect Feliz to be on the roster after September call ups. VV to the pen as well and we've got some live arms back there for the playoff push.

First base is a joke, there's nothing more anyone can say at this point

Will Ward be able to use his walker in MLB games?

Before we even get to that, would the Blue Crabs even accept a straight up Carter for Ward swap????

What about a guy like Wilin Rosario from Colorado? I don't know how he is defensively but dude can hit.

Since Dallas pitches Saturday and will pitch an inning or so in the all star game any idea when he is projected to pitch next? I would like to go sit in the korner for one of his starts. Its section 109 correct?

nevermind. I see it is 105 and 106

The Coors effect is strong with this one. .380 at home.... .205 on the road. For his career .313 at home and .238 on the road. No thanks.

There just aren't many realistic options at 1B that are an upgrade which is why I think we won't do shite.

(Reymin) Guduan

One of my buddies has seen him pitch a couple of times. He says that Guduan is absolutely scary good. He says that he can easily hit 100MPH and has a knee buckling off-speed pitch.

I definitely expect him to be a September call up.

I read the latest story on MLB about Lowrie's rehab. At no point was playing or preparing to play first base mentioned. I can feel my anger growing.

Not really put much thought into it, but from the highest high to the lowest low, is first base the weakest position across the show? Got to be close.

Jed Lowrie likely to man corner infield spot upon return, but outfield in play, too

This is new.

quote:

When Jed (Lowrie) comes back who knows exactly what combination, how we’re going to do everything.

quote:

But the possibility Lowrie could also play some outfield hasn’t been ruled out, at the very least.

I didn't realize he's played 3B in 83 games, that's encouraging.

Just get him in the lineup.

On another note, I'm not giving up on Singleton but damn he's disappointed so far. His OBP in his minors career is .387. With the big club, 146 K's in 387 PA (40%). There's gotta be something going on.

On the other hand, Brett Wallace had an OBP of .377 in the minors. frick.

Throughout MLB? I don't think so. There are some really good ones. I'd say SS or C is the weakest throughout the show. I mean 1B you have Cabrera, Votto, Goldy, freeman, Hosmer, Abreu, Pujols, Rizzo, Gonzalez. I think after them it's a huge drop off though. Either they're really good or really bad.

I mean the captain is one of the best SS in the AL after less than 30 games. That should tell you, not only how good he is, but also how terrible all the other options are.

Catcher, besides Posey, Molina, Martin, McCann there aren't many good offensive catchers.

Yeah most of the likely sellers have guys who are cornerstones that they aren't trading, like Votto for instance, or they have really shitty guys like Napoli or Howard.

Looking at the free agents next year there really isn't a good option for us to pick up either IMO. We might be best moving Tucker there in the offseason and getting an OF or finding someone who we can convert there.

Another season of Carter will make me do violent things though, I'm not sure how I will make it through the rest of this year
