I guess this means the Cubs won't be signing Dexter Fowler. Solid addition to a very deep Cubs outfield.

Were they really going to pay Fowler 70 Million?

Apparently not. But he has been an incredible player for that team, there's no debating that. Been a really critical part of their lineup and the numbers back that up.

Jon Jay is a scrappy player. Cubs are loaded in the outfield and this is a low-risk signing that seems to signal the end of Fowler's time in Chicago

Love Fowler more than my luggage but we all knew this was only a one year "extension" and he was going to go out there and make bank and good for him.

As a fan you always want the band to stay together but hey, don't forget Wings won 7 grammys and an oscar too. We'll be good again next year.

Jay is a solid player. He's not great, but you know what you'll get out of him. Id say if he starts more than 50% of games then its safe to say your outfield took a hit from last year.

Example: We had to let him go to make room for Grichuk, and it's ended up being a good move. So that should give you an idea

Doesn't make sense to resign Fowler, unfortunately.

They obviously like Soler and Almora. Nobody will take Heyward at his cost and last year's production. Zobrist is an outfielder with Baez's emergence. And Schwarber has to play somewhere, although I think he gets traded this offseason.

Jay should be a solid 5th outfielder/pinch runner.

That would be bad news. well good news, i guess

You need him in the outfield, or in the lineup. You cant have your outfielders be Jay Almora and Hayward. Thats damn near zero offense.

My buddy is a huge Cubs fan and is also infatuated with Schwarber. Sorry, he's not a good fit with an NL team configured like the Cubs. He needs to go to the AL where he can rotate between catcher, first, and DH. Better for the player and better for the Cubs

The outfield in this scenario would be Zobrist, Heyward, and Soler. Hardly "damn near zero offense".

lol c'mon now! please leave Heyward out of that

I thought the whole idea was to get Almora in the game?

Meh

His bat cancels out all of his so called deficiencies

If for some reason they do decide to trade him, I'm ok with it, because a huge haul is coming back. Only way they sell him. Wouldn't be against adding a Sale or Archer along with some pen help

As for Jay, he's a perfect platoon guy w almora. With that obp, maddon will bat him at the top. He has two jobs - get on base and cover CF adequately

For sure more hits than anyone else to ever serve as a Supreme Court Justice...

If only he wouldn't have had that feud with Pierre L'Enfant, he'd have a street named for him in our nations capital.

I think Soler will be the one they try to shop. I'm just not sure there is any room for Soler at this point.

Schwarber isn't getting traded. He might be the Cubs most talented hitter.

You're right that Zobrist will see more OF time in 2017 because of Baez.

I could see a lot of Heyward in CF with Zobrist flanking him in right and Schwarber will be playing LF.

Almora giving days off to all of them in CF on certain days.

I agree

Schwarber has proven to be a hard worker.im confident he will become a competent OF

We can't forget Bryant, Baez, and contreras can all play OF too

Cubs should play Almora in center and watch him turn into Kevin Kiermaier.

Heyward in center, where he's an average defender, with last year's offense or even slightly above, is worthless.

Jay is a good 5th OF and PH. $8M seems like a lot for that.
