He hopes to be ready by July. He's coming off his second Tommy John surgery. Of note, this is a Major League deal. Not a bad flyer for the Cubs.

Be a good way to keep some bullpen arms fresh for the post season. Can't imagine there's much upside here. Just seems unrealistic that he coudl be used in high leverage situations but either way i like it.

Yep. Not much to lose here. Bonus if he pitches well

Is this more of an insurance policy type signing? Are the Cubs concerned about Strop and/or Rondon? Or, as stated, a way to possibly keep arms fresh later this summer?

I guess this only because of the way they said they were going to treat the starters. Keep their innings limited (unless of course jake does his jake thing where he carries a no hitter into the 8th inning start after start) throughout the season (even possibly skipping starts) to stay fresh for the post season

If the Cubs were concerned about either of those two, they have internal options that they would rely on before Nathan, like Justin Grimm or Neil Ramirez. I just think this is a low risk, high reward signing. If he pitches well once healthy, great. If not...oh well, good job good effort.

ETA: To directly answer the question, I see no reason why the Cubs are worried about Rondon or Strop. They are nails.

would just be an extra bullpen arm. He isnt a threat to close or even set up, as he was terrible the last time we saw him last year

That would be like hedging your retirement with a couple lottery tickets.

Good luck. He was complete trash when he played with Detroit and everyone thought they were getting a good closer.
