If you are against college players getting paid/ improper benefits, how do you police it? What could you do to put an end to it that will affect players past and present?

I know there is a ways to stop freshman and sophmores, but what about the juniors and seniors that have proven themselves to be nfl ready? Also, how would it be possible to penalize players found guilty after they make it to the NFL?

it's a Pandora's Box that you can never open. First off, there are legal Title IX issues that would prevent you for just offering it to football players. But even if you can get around that, you'll get into cost of living adjustments for rural towns like Starkville compared to Nashville or Los Angeles. Then you'll later get into annual cost of living increases for inflation. You'll have to have a payroll system because you can deal w/ cash, and you'll have to issue W-2 or 1099 each year... no matter what the NCAA or SEC decides, the IRS has very enforceable laws and regulation of paying people. So w/ Uncle Sam taking his bite, the money shrinks and becomes more of a hassle that it's worth.

Spurrier and the co-signers knew such a deal was DOA, but they've earned a lot of goodwill w/ the players and recruits that they understand the situation isn't fair, but they tried and there is nothing more they can do.

"It's quite pungent."

Paying players isn't a bad idea. Of course the problem is if you pay them $300/game - some schools will cheat and pay them $1,000. How do you stop it?

Team up with the NFL to permanently ban collegiate players who take benefits. But we all know that will never happen.

The NCAA is like Congress, they have to pass these dumb arse rules to legitimize their authority and jobs.

I'm not just talking about the schools paying them, i'm talking about the "donations", "loner" cars, stuff like that.

OOPS... my first post was in response to Spurrier's proposed payments.....

for improper benefits, they only way to really get it under control is to criminalize it so that you can penalize recruits, players, coaches, boosters and runners. penalties would include possible jail time and financial sanctions that could equal the sanction cost to the school. in the late 1980's when Clemson was staring at the Death Penalty, a sports columnist proposed such a state law that would subject the guilty to the billions of dollars lost if Clemson had to shut down football.

Criminalization would also open up law enforcement to set up stings. If there were a couple stings against coaches and players, you'd see it come to an end very quickly. The only problem with this is that it only works if it is a Federal Law, and there is no way on earth that the schools or the NCAA want the Feds to get jurisdiction. Once they get in the door, next they go for full regulation.

The reason I posted this is bc of Reggie bush giving up his award pissed me off. I know that's Heisman committee and not NCAA but nothing happens to these guys who were good but didn't win any awards. i think you should be fined or something if you are caught. younger players banned from NCAA.
