Penn State should be in the playoffs. LSU is simply a much better team than their record indicates. Penn State's run defense isn't good enough to beat them and LSU's defense can nearly shut down any offense. There's only a handful of teams with the run defense capable of beating LSU, and LSU played nearly all of them.

Then why is LSU not in the playoffs? Where is the uproar? Penn State is supposedly better than their record indicates..THEY BEAT OSU. Are you telling me record matters?

I'm saying it's a matchup issue, not neccessarily an overall team quality issue. Some teams matchup with others better based on scheme or talent at specific positions. LSU matches up better against Penn State than Wisconsin due to Wisky's superior run defense. However, Penn State matches up better against Wisconsin than LSU does.

The more talented team does not always have the advantage against every team. Scheme matters, and so does where that talent is on said team.

So who deserves to be in the playoffs? Penn State or LSU? Or do records matter?

Penn State. Just like Alabama was more worthy than Ole Miss and A&M the past few years when Alabama lost to them.

I'm not sure what your "gotcha" is supposed to be.

So PSU deserves it more than LSU because record matters but OSU doesn't deserve it more than PSU cause records don't matter. Got it.

And OSU couldn't possibly be more worthy when it lost to PSU like Alabama in your scenario.

Penn. state won their conference. LSU and Ohio state didn't. Penn State also beat Ohio State head to head.

Who should be in the playoffs is not he same as "who would win this matchup on a neutral field". Better teams lose to inferior teams every week. Raw talent is never the sole decider of a game. Matchup, dispersion of talent (where that talent is on the roster), depth, luck, and scheme also play a big role.

I think LSU would win on a neutral field against Penn State, even though LSU would likely lose to several other teams (Washington, Michigan, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, ect.)

Record does matter, but so does strength of schedule, so does winning your conference, so does head to head record.

Alabama still won their division and conference, and this was more deserving than A&M and Ole Miss those years when they beat Bama.

Penn State not only beat out Ohio State in their head to head matchup, but they also beat Ohio State for the division title, and won their conference title.

So if Florida beat Alabama they would have deserved to go to the playoffs over them? If Va Tech won they should have been in the playoffs over Clemson? Was the PSU Pitt game an exhibition?

PSU was the superior team to OSU being outgained by 180 yards and having 12 less minutes time of possession playing a night game at home the week after a bye and winning by 3 points on a blocked FG return?

Alsbama would have deserved to be out, but Florida with their losses still would not have been in. The next best conference champ would have gotten in, either Western Michigan or Oklahoma.

You could say the same about LSU and Florida, Wisconsin, and Auburn, yet LSU lost all 3 of those games. Points matter, not yards.
