They basically had 5 really bad years under Dan Hawkins, then 2 atrocious seasons under Jon Embree. Haven't had a winning season in 10 years.
I know facilities and university support were bad, but I also seem to recall those two having trouble retaining assistants because they were way underpaid for a major program. Do you know how true that was or if it is anymore?

I don't really remember them being relevant since Kordell Stewart was there.
They were ranked #2 in the country and trounced Nebraska and won the BigXII in 2001. Got shafted out of a National Championship berth. Miami probably would have crushed them anyway. Won the BigXII North in 2002, it was all downhill from there. Though they did win the BigXII North again in '04 and '05.

I like him. McElwain did well in a short time there. Interested to see if he sticks around or is just trying to springboard. New stadium opens in a couple years.

I do know that Jon Embree was only making $750k as a head coach of a major college program. Not unreasonable to assume that his assistants were not well paid.

Yeah, after I typed it I went back and looked at the yearly results. Didn't realize they participated in as many Big XII championship games as they have. Also, can't believe I forgot them blowing out Nebraska and then getting trounced by Texas a year or so later.

Weed should be a good recruiting tool though

Yeah Texas mauldragged them like 70-7 or something like that.

Nah, they had 2 losses; Fresno State and a blowout to Texas.
Oregon had a better case and crushed CU in the Fiesta Bowl. The Pac-10 was perceived as down though.

70-3
It was 2005, they went in on a 2-game losing skid (30-16 @ Iowa St; 30-3 @ home vs Nebraska). They were 5-3 and winners of the Big XII North that year.

R.I.P. Big XII North. A force to be reckoned with.

Hawkins also insisted starting his son at QB (who was terrible).

An ex of mine played volleyball for the Buffs, pretty much stated that the last couple of administrations have wanted to squash mens athletics completely after the 90's. Said their athletic department is completely tied by the admins and not a priority at all on campus anymore.

Oh look its this yearly thread

CU doesn't give a shite about athletics.

went to a game last year. renovations were being done. the stadium was half empty, and the fans were quiet. no joke - been to middle schools with better atmospheres. they sell sushi and tofu in the stands. only in boulder. good thing is you can sit pretty much anywhere in the stadium with the cheapest ticket.
cu's problem is that it turned its back from local talent and focused on recruiting cali thugs. 'cu' stands for 'california university,' and csu is known as the local state school. the best colorado talent either go out-of-state or to csu. cu recruits the cali rejects that the other pac 12 teams don't want.
also, colorado is all about the broncos. cu/csu are an afterthought. outside of boulder and fort collins, i have probably seen more texas, a&m, nebraska, and auburn(!) shirts than cu/csu combined.
