In a "Week 0" matchup, Cal plays Hawaii in the first college football game of the 2016-2017 season on Friday, August 26 at 7:00pm PDT, 10:00pm EDT on ESPN.

The game will be played at ANZ Stadium in Sydney Australia in what has been dubbed the "Sydney Cup." Local time will be Saturday, August 27 at noon. An estimated 70,000 tickets have been sold for what is likely to be a pretty crappy game as Hawaii tries to recover from the Norm Chow era.

The only players of note are probably Cal QB Davis Webb, the transfer from Texas Tech who Mel Kiper has said is his #1 Senior QB entering this season, and Cal freshman WR Demetris Robertson, probably the only 5-star recruit on either team. A sad state of affairs but if you're awake you're still going to watch it because it's the first game of the season and the only FBS game of the weekend. Let the season begin!

Oh and after the game Cal has the next week off to recover, but Hawaii flies to Ann Arbor for a Week 1 game at Michigan. That's nuts.

This game is going to be a bloodbath. I'll take the early bedtime.

Pretty smart marketing, though, and the teams and Aussie fans onsite will be having fun.

The Cal football team is flying out tomorrow (Saturday) so they have the whole week to acclimatize, and I assume Hawaii is doing the same. It's such a big trip (and a rare event for the Aussies) that it's being treated like a bowl game, with bowl-week-type activities. And it's worth pointing out that the teams are guaranteed a profit, otherwise no one would go.

While there was a little bit of grumbling about the loss of a home game—it's replacing a previously scheduled body-bag game against an FCS opponent—it's generally being seen as a good thing for the players and the program. The key is having the game a week early and having an extra week to recover. What Hawaii is doing, keeping the scheduled game at Michigan the next week, is crazy. They are going to get slaughtered (even worse than expected).

It makes me happy when Hawaii is good at football. I wish they could somehow end up in the Pac 12.

I'm guessing the same way you decided on your SN.

I'd watch a Div III game at this point, any football is good football.

Anyone remember that Montana St. vs. North Dakota St. Matchup last year?

I will watch, and most likely bet just out of boredom. Good luck to Cal, I will be expecting them to cover whatever the spread will be at game time.

They should have allowed Cal to schedule a 13th game as is custom when teams play at Hawaii on the road. Even though this is in Australia, it's the same concept.

I guess you can't though, you always have to keep into account that you might play in the conference championship game. And you definitely want your bye week.
