The college football playoffs on ESPN will no doubt be making a resolution to improve their ratings.

Both the Orange Bowl and the Cotton Bowl were down by double digits from last season’s college football semifinals while airing on New Years Eve . The Orange Bowl, which saw Clemson take on Oklahoma, drew a 9.7 rating in the advertiser coveted adults 18-49 demographic. Last year’s comparable semifinal game, which aired on Jan. 1, scored a 15.3, meaning it dropped almost 38 percent

Total Viewers

Pre New Year's Day:
#1) Music City Bowl 5.4 million
#2) Texas Bowl 5.0 million

New Year's Eve
Orange 15.6 million (down from last year's Rose of 28 million)
Cotton 18 .5 million

The Michigan State-Alabama Cotton Bowl drew a 9.6 rating for ESPN compared to 15.2 for Ohio State-Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last Jan. 1 — a 36.8 percent drop. Total viewership crashed 34.4 percent, going from 28,271,000 to 18,552,000.

College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock told the AP he was still awaiting the results of the New Year's Day games.

Will be interesting to see the ratings that the Rose & Sugar get today.

Not good for ESPN

Plus for most of those games we already knew what the outcome was going to be.

Doesn't take a genius to realize ratings are better on "national hang over day" than the biggest party day of the year. It blows my mind that this is even news worthy. Someone give me a fricking job and let me call the shots

I wish we had a bigger sample size...I'm sure being on NYE killed ratings, but there were other factors too. Matchups were way better last year, plus it was the first playoff so people probably made it more of a priority to see.

Both games were blowouts this year.

Weren't all three games close last year?

What moron puts the first game at 3pm on a work day?

What genius decides to put the most important games on one of the biggest party nights of the year?

Having 40 fracking bowl games doesn't help.

There are now too many games to schedule in a way that promotes ratings.

Good

I hope they continue to plunge.

CFB has become so corporate. Name brands and money grabs.

Blame ESPN/Disney - they own damn near all of them, hence why they're spread out over two weeks at all times of the day and never overlap.
