The inscrutable behavior of 18-to-22-year-olds is actually understandable in this case: For students today, there are more reasons than ever to skip the game. The cellular reception at the stadium is bad. The nonconference schedules these days are worse. And the high-definition broadcast at home (or at the frat house, the bar or wherever) is gorgeous. The result is students are focusing on the few marquee games—like Saturday's matchup of No. 6 LSU and No. 9 Georgia—at the expense of others.

Nailed it.

Agreed that he hit the nail on the head...

I thought this was funny:

quote:

When asked if they agreed with the statement that they didn't have time to attend Tennessee's football games, undergraduates there averaged a response of 3.15 on a scale of 1 to 5, said Tennessee professor Robin Hardin, who surveyed 2,500 students for a report on their habits commissioned by the school's athletic department. (The depressing state of their team doesn't help matters.)

Here's one way to keep interest among students high: SELL ALCOHOL.

We're going to see football attendance decline in both the NFL and college for the next 20 years or so.

The fact of the matter is that going to a game just isn't that much fun. It's expensive, crowded, stressful, you have to deal with traffic, drunk idiots, and potentially poor weather. The view of the game sucks compared to what you get on the TV. Sometimes you can't even tell what's going on on the field. Ever been at a game and a penalty happens but you don't even know what the call was? Well, if you were watching on TV you'd know. And with watching on TV you can pause the game, go to a clean bathroom with no lines, eat reasonably priced food that you purchased at the store, keep up with other games at the same time, etc. etc.

I know I'll get a bunch of anecdotal responses saying how you enjoy going to games, but the statistics don't pan out and will continue to prove me right.

This seems more anecdotal than factual.

I agree that we'll see a decline in college attendance because the sport is flawed, and the schedule is boring. There's no real parity in college football. No one cares about rooting for their school or supporting "their boys." They want to win. They want to feel important and feel successful, and it's much less about pageantry and tradition.

The fact that the LSU-Auburn game - even when Auburn has improved - was an obvious blowout prior to the coin flip is hurting the game. The fact that even though Alabama has one of its worst teams in the last six years and they're still winning convincingly is hurting the game. The fact that most of the top ten teams have faced Savannah State and Sister Deadra's School for Etiquette type schools is hurting the game.

I think going to games are a blast especially when it's a good one against a rival.

If I had my way, I'd take out two games a year. Ten game schedule like in high school. Eight conference games, one homecoming, and one big OOC game.

No more playoffs or talk of championships. Just bowl games, and make bowl games fun and meaningful by focusing on tradition, pageantry, and school spirit.

But, but, but, according to the vast majority of the posters on the SECRant students only choose their university because of the football team. Say it isn't so! You mean students actually care about their studies more than the football team?

You might be right. I can't prove those those reasons contribute to declining attendance.

It seems like many people enjoy the social aspect of the tailgate than the actual game. And I can understand that to an extent. Hell, I have family members who tailgate for every game but rarely actually go into the stadium for the game, or if they do they stay for one quarter or so then go back out and continue tailgating outside the stadium while watching the game on TV or listening to it on the radio. Anecdotal, I know. But still interesting to consider.

We may not be able to even point to reasons why attendance may decline, but we'll be able to point to attendance numbers and see if it is really happening.

If you have to study on a saturday night consistently in undergrad you are doing it wrong. Even if you just go to the game and skip the tailgating it can be a nice 3 hour break from the books.

I know the statistics don't back it up but there is nothing like actually attending a game. Watching something on TV just doesn't compare to being there.

if the game were at noon, and I didn't feel like going out that night. I did it occasionally.

Yea its pretty simple, times are changing and the model of people going to games is too. More and more people would rather watch on tv and can you blame them? It's cheaper to buy an hdtv than it is season tickets. They make less in ticket sales but they do make more in tv now than they used to so it's not like the popularity is declining, just how people view it. I know some games are fun and you can't replace some memories at games but that isn't all of them, most are just fine to watch on tv.

not at all anyone who went to a BCS school knows lots of students would rather spend more time boozing at the tailgate, arrive late then leave at half to drink more at home and watch the game.

WVU used to have pass outs to help entice people to come back in. We would leave at half drink then come back in. We got rid of it and now sell booze and the issue of keeping people in is much better.

Not selling booze inside a stadium that has 100,000 people outside it drinking is pretty retarded

Somehow they think it is better for fans to down a shite load of alcohol then go inside the stadium than to drink casually throughout. People are going to get too drunk either way but at least let them pace themselves and make money off it.
