The Cubs nailed it in the first two rounds last night, apparently. From what I have read, this isn't a 2013 franchise-changing draft. But it's a good one so far.

OF/IF Ian Happ | Cincinnati

quote:

There are some guys who just get hitting. Ian Happ is one of those guys. The switch-hitting outfielder was the best pure hitter for me in the draft, and is a great pick for the Cubs (yes, I know, you wanted a pitcher). His swing is excellent from both sides of the plate, and there's sneaky pop from the left-side as well, with enough strength to drive into the gaps from the right. The question is whether he'll play second base or the outfield, but wherever he plays, he's going to hit. Another great pick from Theo Epstein and company.
quote:

I suspect he will sign quickly and head to Arizona. A few weeks in Extended Spring Training and a few games in the Arizona Rookie League should be all he needs before setting off for Eugene. With his polished approach to hitting he should have little trouble with the Northwest League and by the end of the summer he could be in A ball. If South Bend is in the playoff hunt that may be where he stops, but if not I wouldn’t be shocked to see him make it all the way to Myrtle Beach for that post-season experience and additional at bats. If all goes well he could finish 2016 in Double A and be ready for a trip to the majors after a few weeks or months in Iowa in 2017.
OF Donnie Dewees | North Florida

quote:

I'm a big fan of this Cubs class. Dewees can really hit, with some dropping a 65 hit tool on him. I think it's closer to 60, and it wouldn't shock me if he was a leadoff hitter who can play center field someday. That's pretty good in the second round.
quote:

Eighteen homers against sixteen strikeouts. Thirty walks. A line of .422/.483/.749. Yes, that .749 is his SLG, not his OPS. And he hits left handed. And he steals bases. And that power display came despite suffering a wrist injury last season. He may have more power to come.

...

His bat, though, should move about as quickly as Happ’s. I suspect Dewees will also be a quick sign, enjoy a short stay in Arizona, and then be given a chance to hit his way as far up the system as he can. He should start in Eugene. That means the Eugene outfield, at least for a time, could be DeWees, Happ, and Eloy Jimenez. That would be a very impressive collection of outfield bats for any level of the minors.
Just look at what Dewees did again...18 HR against 16 K. That's more HR than K. Not more BB than K, BUT MORE HR THAN K! (!!!)

I don't really know how to describe that kind of plate discipline. But the Cubs obviously have a strong gameplan of accumulating the NCAA's best bats and hoarding them. Whether they turn into Cubs or turn other players into Cubs via trades is yet to be seen. But I like what this organization is doing.

The MLB Cubs start a two game interleague series with Detroit. I don't know if they are going to make any roster moves today for this series, but they just may think of something after the four game home series against the Reds when they have to travel to Cleveland and then Minnesota. Interestingly enough, the four game Cleveland series is split into two-two game series...the first two being at Wrigley Field then the final two in Cleveland. The Cubs will only need a DH in five games during that stretch against CLE and MIN.

Sanchez has been an abortion lately. Lester's been bad recently, right?

At this point I'm just going to go ahead and assume that the Mcleod is always right and can do no wrong.

He claims he always had bryant over appel, and there's really no reason to doubt that based on the cubs philosophy. Then getting schwarber underslot and getting laughed at only to (hopefully) have the last laugh, which set their whole draft up last year. I'd say i'd trust him until he had a stinker, but he'll be a GM well before that.

He had a bad outing last time out, but otherwise, no.

The Cubs are also very excited about last year's pitching class from the draft, too. There are a lot of college and high school arms that can develop.

And don't forget the international free agent signing period. The Cubs will be players there, too, and for bats.

Might as well go broke on this one. Not like the penalties will even exist after the next CBA (at least that's my best guess).

So you guys signed Soriano to a minor league deal. Did I miss something with Rondon? He has pretty good numbers. He walked one guy the other night and got yanked out.

Yeah, just signed Soriano to a minor league deal. Don't worry, Cubs fans, it's Rafael and not Alfonso.

Signing Soriano just means they are trying to solidify the bullpen...I don't think he'll get save chances, but to start he'll likely need to pitch his way out of Iowa and then end up pitching the 6th or 7th innings (if I had to make a random guess).

He was pretty shaky thursday night as well. But for that pickoff by ross could've been a different story.

He's been fine, but not dominant of late. He'll still get the lions share of the closing opportunities would be my guess, but i expect it to be more matchup based than it has been in the past.

As for soriano. we have a bullpen that includeds travis wood and edwin jackson so any help we can get stuff.

Any roster moves to address the need for a DH? Haven't seen anything, so I guess we're rolling with what we've got.

Comments: Illinois' best high school pitching prospect since the Astros made Mike Foltynewicz a first-round pick in 2010, Hudson is an extremely athletic and projectable left-hander whose stock continues to improve as the Draft approaches. He's a safe bet to go in the top three rounds, with some talk that he could become a supplemental first-rounder. Hudson's best pitch is a 75-78 mph curveball with good depth that should add even more power once he adds strength to his skinny 6-foot-7 frame. He commands his breaking ball well, though he relies on it too often. The Missouri recruit usually pitches at 86-90 mph and tops out around 92 with his fastball. With his arm action and projection, it won't be a surprise if he reaches the mid-90s in the future. He shows the makings of a changeup, though he doesn't trust it yet and doesn't need it much against high school competition.

Good for him. He's going to be a good one. I work with a family friend of his. He's committed to Mizzou, but I don't think he's going to pass up whatever he gets offerred.

Not for a two game series. Montero will probably DH tonight since Ross will be catching Lester.

Jacob Turner will start a rehab assignment with Tennessee today. That's very encouraging news.
