Last night, nails reliever Neil Ramirez was taken out of the game with "shoulder discomfort" and will have an MRI to assess the damage, if any. I don't know about you, but "shoulder discomfort" is about one of the scariest things you want to hear regarding a pitcher.

It's very, very likely that Neil Ramirez will see the disabled list. In that case, the Cubs will need to make a roster move at the MLB level. Injuries have depleted the bench and third base has been manned by all manner of people...from something called a Jonathan Herrera, Mike Olt (whenever the moon aligns with the belt buckle of Orion and Saturn's rings shine a blue hue), Arismendy Alcantara and even Chris Coghlan. The Cubs already have 13 pitchers on the roster with lefty Zach Rosscup being recalled when Tommy La Stella was placed on the disabled list.

The Cubs need a position player. It's April 16th and there is no game today. The Iowa Cubs are in New Orleans, where it's going to rain for the 40th straight day. Tomorrow is April 17th.

If the Cubs don't call up Kris Bryant tomorrow, there are legitimate concerns over his defense at 3B and he could possibly be in line for a definite move to the outfield. However, the Cubs NEED a 3B right away. Who knows when Mike Olt will be back in the lineup? They can't keep trotting out Jonathan Herrera.

It just seems like everything lines up all too perfectly for Kris Bryant to debut tomorrow at Wrigley Field. He could play 3B because honestly, there's no need replace Chris Coghlan at this very moment.

Bryant is not on the 40-man roster. Chris Denorfia is and is apparently healthy. I'm still thinking it makes too much sense for tomorrow.

I still think they wait to bring Bryant up on the road next week.

I'll be surprised if Bryant gets the call before Monday. Someone pointed out that if the Cubs somehow get into a playoff game for the 2nd wild card spot at the end of the season, that's an additional regular season game. The Cubs would lose that extra year of control because of that one game, and since the reason he started in the minors to begin with was that year, I can't see them potentially screwing that up.

Also, I'm not sure how the rain out against the Cards factors in since the Cubs didn't play that day.

Plus, I think Theo really believes in calling up rookies on the road.

I'm still betting on Monday regardless of whether Ramirez goes to the DL.

I feel like there are a lot of roster implications that could basically force the Cubs to do it now. The Cubs are smart and I trust their judgment.

I'm just on the cusp of turning into a meatball here, because I really want this tomorrow.

It's just days, not games.

That's why I think that as well. It's going to be a circus whenever his first game at Wrigley is. It would be nice to have about 5-6 games under his belt before that happens.

Under the CBA, 1 year of service is defined as 172 days. A player may earn up to 172 days of Major League service during a championship season (regular season), which generally lasts 183 calendar days.

I just did some research, and it looks like you're correct. I stand corrected.

quote:

So, if the Cubs want that 2021 year of control over Bryant, he must miss 12 big league games next year, right?

Tut, tut. The operative word is “days,” not games. Presently, every team is scheduled to open the 2015 season on April 6, though there will be a game on April 5 (the Sunday Night Opening Game Or Whatever You Call It), and that will mark the official start of the big league season.

If the season starts on April 5, and Bryant need be kept down only 12 days, we’d be looking at April 17 as the first day he could come up – and stay up the rest of the season – with the Cubs securing an extra year of control. Based on those calculations, thanks to two off-days in the early going, Bryant would miss just 9 games at the start of the year before being called up.

From Lester earl's other brother Brett:

*(As we discussed yesterday, there is some debate about whether a tiebreaker game 163 would extend the year for service time purposes, meaning that calling Bryant up on Friday would be a risk. From a reading of the CBA, and from asking around, my understanding is that a game 163 does not extend the season for service time purposes. But, because there is a credible report out there to the contrary, I’m just going to leave the issue alone for now. We’ll cross that bridge again only if Bryant is actually called up on Friday, which, as I’ve said, I’m not necessarily anticipating.)

Has nothing to do with games. Strictly based on days. The makeup game against the Cards will be played on a day that was on the 183 day calendar so the only impact the rainout had on Bryant is that the Cubs will benefit from having his services for an extra game.

@rob_backus81

@BleacherNation Kaplan just said he confirmed with MLBPA, Game 163 does not count toward service time.

So Friday is a real possibility...

Ramirez's MRI doesn't look promising according to reports. There could be DL time and some long-lasting impacts to the bullpen if he's out for a while.

That's a bad enough loss as Ramirez is an outstanding piece to a damn fine bullpen the Cubs have assembled. Justin Grimm has also been out for about a month now.

ETA: I have not seen Iowa's lineup for Game 1 yet. First pitch is 5:00 PM this evening.

I'm with you. I expect they'd rather handcuff joe maddon with making due for the pads series than bring him up...or just put beef at 3b.

I don't know guys. I just don't believe in this "wait for a road series" thing. I know it was the trend and that is a very valid reason to think they will wait.

It's just the roster situation and injuries all of a sudden. And it's time. I don't think they should wait any longer.

I think you've got to couple the trend along with the do you really want to deal with the discussion on day 1 that he's eligible? Not saying you cave to public pressure and certainly valid reasons with the injuries but maybe it's jsut my exhaustion from people bitching about it, i'd rather avoid that circus.

Also it's winter aviator hat day, what more draw do you need to go to wrigley on friday?
