You see that exact play in the major leagues all the time. I think it's a mistake, but doesn't guarantee we win.
Not in the 8th with 0 outs with a runner on 3rd who will 100% score and tie the game

LSU's offense in 2011 after Iowa State all but assured a rematch. Tyrann Mathieu got us going against Arkansas and Georgia, and we had no chance in the Mulligan Bowl. Our team's mentality changed once Alabama was given new life.

You see effort to break it up at any point in an MLB game if it's a close play..you see much more aggressive slides at different times. I realize that college baseball has different rules, although I don't understand why.

I wish the sliding rules were the same.

But a runner on 1st in the 8th in the Majors most likely knows to get down and out of the way because the hitter literally tied that damn game.

It was a sacrifice.

Double play for the tie.

DONT SLIDE IN HARD.

I agree. Was a fricking idiotic play.

My only issue is the runner on 3rd should not be sent back. So stupid.

And, yes, I realize that is the rule. Doesn't make sense, but oh well.

Again, it was a dumb arse play by Slaughter.

He didn't slide in that hard...looks like he kinda brainfarted thinking he might be able to beat it but it wasn't a "hard" slide line he was trying to make significant contact. Obviously under college rules it was a dumb decision and it sucks tgsf he will likely regret it for the rest of his life. Just don't think the umps need to call that in that moment. At the end of close games especially championships, umps and refs and officials always let things play out more loosely.

Bone headed play by a freshman changed the complexity of the game. It was the right call but hurts because it had no baring on the runner scoring.

By this logic just tackle the receiver on the last second hail mary because hey the ref shouldn't make that call at that point in the game

I'm sure refs would rather not make this call actually fearing backlash for possibly altering the game on a cheap foul. There is always bunch of grabbing on Hail Marys.
But obviously a DB obnoxiously tackling a WR takes the guessing game out it for the ref and he can throw the flag with no repercussions later.

I agree with this. Why the heck would you send the runner back if the team is obviously going for the double play???

Despite the original post this is absolutely a great thread.

I would clarify that I think of it as a play that when the play started everyone assumed one thing would happen, but at the end of the play something completely opposite happened that immediately and significantly changed the win possibility of the teams.

Personally witnessed, Tracy Porter's interception of Farve in the 4th quarter of the NFC title game when the Vikings were essentially in field goal range.
