If we see the Bryce Harper of 2015 in 2017 and 2018, he will receive a contract in excess of $400 million and an AAV of over $40 mil.

The current record for an MLB deal is $325 million and the highest AAV for a Pos Player is $31 mil.

Once Bryce resets the market, the starting number for guys like Correa, Lindor, Bryant, etc goes from 200 to 300 and the AAVs rise into the mid 30's.

This will be a huge boon for the players but a death nail for small market teams

Only temporarily.

This will go the way of the NFL with a salary cap and less guaranteed money. And if the players strike again, RIP MLB.

I refuse to cheer for any athlete that has a 400+ million dollar contract.

MLBPA is way too strong to allow non guaranteed contracts and a salary cap

Why not? Teams are making money hand over foot but players shouldn't?

I didn't say the players shouldn't make money. A 350 million dollar payday is still a payday after all.

You might be right. All the players can do is strike or play. And baseball is hanging by too thin of a thread with young people for owners to allow a strike to happen.

How did the MLB go from being practically worthless 10 years ago to being almost as profitable as the NFL nowadays.

I wonder if people said the same thing back in 1930 when Ruth was making $80k

It's not like this $400 million is coming out of orphan's pockets. The alternative is the billionaire owner pocketing even more money.

Possibly. I held the same opinion with A-Rod's record setting contract though and don't plan on changing it.
