Was it the Peyton effect that caused the call to be out of bounds instead of letting it go like they are allegedly supposed to do?

eta: Wow, the ref is looking at Trindon and signalling out of bounds while the ball is 3 yards away.

I've seen them blow it dead before the opposing team recovered before and still award the possession to the recovering team. How so?

I hate how refs blow plays dead early which can take away TDs and field position.

When in doubt let the play continue. You can always go back and review it.

It's supposed to be I think. From that replay, I don't think the ref even saw that the ball was loose. He blew the play dead without even seeing where the ball was located.
