Are they playing for the #1 pick? Going Nationals route to secure top picks?

After the trade of Simmons and rumors of Freeman to Cards, I'm curious as the direction of the team.

They have a ton of arms for the starting rotation and the bullpen but they are now lacking bats it seems IF Freeman gets traded.

I'm starting to think the rebuild will take longer than most expected. I was hoping for a competitive team when they opened Suntrust in '17. And they still may if the young pitching develops at a decent rate. But the Braves are ridiculously thin with bats in the organization. You do have to score a few runs.

The front office never should've put a specific year (or at least made it public) on a return to competitiveness.

No doubt. They will be dick for a minimum of two to three more years.

The pitching prospects could be moved but Simmons/Freeman both signed on for something else. If they trade Freeman I am wondering if the team will challenge for the worst record ever.

I have no problem stockpiling talent but they are trading young established pkayers for unprovens.

Should boycott games if freeman is traded. The front office starting to remind me of that Charlie sheen movie.

Freeman and Simmons were both MLB average to above... if they trade both this off-season what do they have left?

I know nothing about baseball anymore except what I hear on ATL talk radio but if .265 (which was a career high) 4 HRs and 44 RBIs is one of your top two bats that says all you need to know.

I mean obviously they are tanking for the rebuild which I guess is necessary because they aren't going anywhere without a major overhaul anyway.

Yea, I love Freddie but we need to quit acting like he is a world beater.

For the SS position that is now considered a good year, we are far away from the steroid age where a SS hits .320 with 30 home runs...

Everything they've done (with the exception of the Markakis signing and Olivera/Wood/Peraza trade) have been with an eye towards the very distant future.

I think the hope is you find a very young, talented and cheap rotation from Miller, Teheran, Wisler, Fried, Allard, Toussaint, Newcomb, Sims, Folty and Soroka. That's a very impressive and valuable collection. You trade the excess. You also have about 8 more arms in the minors who are potential mid-back end guys.

Offensively there is not much obviously. Most of the talent they do have in the system is very low in the minors. Obviously they will likely add more talent in this draft (picking 3rd) and next summer's as well assuming they are terrible this year.

The rotation should be very cheap though so they should be able to fill a lot of holes in FA (whenever they're ready to compete) while they wait on homegrown bats to develop.

I think they will target a lot of bats on the international market where they are supposedly planning to blow by the pool limits. They already have a handshake agreement with Maitan who is the best J2 position player prospect since Sano if not Miggy.

Freddie is not an elite 1B, but you simply cannot trade away a young, controlled offensive talent of his caliber after the previous moves you have made. You can't build an entire roster of 21 year old kids, no matter the talent, and expect to win. You have to have a core to build around and the last remaining guy left on the offensive side is Freddie Freeman. The prospect group we have put together is more than enough to accomplish what this front office wants to accomplish. No need to stock it up more just for the sake of stocking it up more. That's a terrible line of thinking. Especially when the Braves have absolutely nobody in line behind Freddie to step up, and acquiring a productive young 1B is very difficult.

Keep him, build around him. Just my thoughts, and hopefully the thoughts of Coppy.

I know where you're coming from but it's tougher to find a top 5 SS on a team friendly deal than it is an above average 1B on a market value deal.

The Simmons trade imo signaled that they're going to totally tear it down. If you're looking to compete over the next 5 years you don't trade Simmons.

I like Freeman a lot and he's a very good player but if you can get a king's ransom for him, I would go ahead and deal him.

This for sure, but if we are trading Freeman we have to get a legit power hitting prospect back for him. We can't get primarily pitching or a middle infielder type back. Otherwise you don't trade him.
