Researchers have discovered that a neurodegenerative disease linked to pro football players is also showing up in men who played high school contact sports.

Scientists from the Mayo Clinic have discovered that about one-third of men who played contact sports and whose brains had been donated to the Mayo Clinic brain bank had evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is caused by repeated brain trauma.

This seems like a potential selection bias.

At some point this is just a risk of playing contact sports. We have been doing it in some form or fashion since mankind came to be.

Playing soccer we pretty consistently dealt with concussions. We also see a fair amount in girls playing field hockey too.

While I agree with you... This is not an acceptable answer to a lot of people... Somehow people have a hard time wrapping their brains around what CHOICE is. It's not like people (definitely PRO athletes at least) don't know what they're getting into.

Stories like this one are just trying to kill sports as a whole. You find crazy parents all the time who won't let their kids play football because some 1950s RB had 4000 caries with a terrible helmet on and now has brain damage at 100 years old. It's preposterous.

Football will die on the vine over the next fifty years. It will increasingly be seen as a barbaric Twentieth Century sport that was enjoyed in a more unenlightened scientific age.
