Alvarez loses yet another coach because nobody wants to work for him.

That's an odd time to pick.

Wisconsin is dogshit this year. He was going to retire at the end of the year but the team is so bad, he's literally cutting his losses.

Wisconsin better stay the hell away from the younger Bennett.

That's exactly who Wisconsin should be looking to hire.

If Alvarez opens up the job search in the offseason, there's no way they don't contact Bennett. Hopefully he's more interested in maintaining a national power in Charlottesville rather than following his father's path. He can be a legend at UVA if he keeps this up. Just needs to avoid playing Izzo early in the tournament.

Wisconsin would be foolish not to inquire about Tony Bennett, but from someone (builtbadgers) in the know that frequently posts on Wisconsin boards, the younger Bennett is happy at Virginia and does not want the Wisconsin job.

What a career. It's too bad he was not able to get that Division I National Championship back in April.

- 743-233 (.762) record
- Four Division III National Championships
- 364-130 (.737) at Wisconsin
- 172-68 (.717) against B1G opponents, which is the highest winning percentage of all-time
- 14 straight NCAA Tournament appearances (Wisconsin T-4th nationally with 17 consecutive tournaments)
- Two Final Fours and one National runner-up

He was a good one.

Remind me what he said after Wisconsin lost to Duke in the NCAA Championship game.

Why would I spend time doing something that I don't really care about? Feel free to use Google.

Obviously I would love to have Bennett at LSU. But I could see him waiting it out till a national power with easy recruiting ties to peaks his interest. It's obvious he's one of the best Xs and Os coaches in the country, he just needs some horses.
I could see him waiting for Roy Williams to retire, TB would be scary there! Though it would be difficult at first to shake their soft nature.

Bo Ryan has not been shy about his desire for Greg Gard to take over the program. Gard has also had ringing endorsements from former players and coaches, including Saul Phillips and Tom Izzo. Izzo went public with his admiration for Greg Gard, calling him one of the best assistants in the country and a guy with a relentless drive.

Knowing the respect and support he has from those within the basketball community, and the hesitation on the side of Barry Alvarez to hand the job off in-house without doing a nationwide search, I would not doubt if this is indeed true. Ryan wants Gard to get the job and auditioning for it this season, albeit with a down Wisconsin team, likely gives him a better opportunity.

That being said, there are rumors that this "sudden" retirement is not so "sudden" for those close to Ryan, and it was not basketball-related.

ETA: it also needs to be said that Greg Gard has been, for the better part of a few years, another extension of a "head coach" for the Wisconsin program. Ryan has given him more-and-more responsibility, and he has been the guy that has been given on-floor coaching duties, recruiting coordinator, opponent scouting, and game preparation.

"We almost have two head coaches in coach Ryan and coach Gard," Gasser says. "He's got that head coach mentality, that moxie about him. And that’s perfect to have."

lol

if you listen to his explanation, it sounds like it's very true.

Greg Gard is the assistant he wanted to take over the program at the end of last season. But Gard's father was diagnosed with cancer and eventually passed away in October. Ryan thought it wouldn't be right to have him take over the program at that point in his life.

There is more talent at UVA than people realize, though it obviously doesn't compare to a UK, Duke or UNC roster.

For better or for worse (obviously better at this point), Bennett runs a system that requires complete buy-in from the players to succeed. He values that potential as much as raw talent when recruiting a player. In that sense, Brogdon is a perfect player for his approach. Athletic, tough and highly intelligent and plays his role as asked. Tough to find in multiple signees, but whatever Bennett's doing is working. He's a top 3 coach in college basketball IMO, and will make a Final 4 one day soon if the NCAA ever decides to keep Michigan St. out of our region. Izzo is his kryptonite in the postseason.
